Biographical Note

Elliott Ward Cheney was a professor of mathematics at Iowa State University and the University of California Los Angeles before joining the Department of Mathematics at The University of Texas at Austin in 1964 where he taught until his retirement in the Spring of 2005. He graduated from Lehigh University with a B. A. in 1951 and received his Ph. D. from the University of Kansas in 1957 with the thesis “On Gauge Functions.” Dr. Cheney worked primarily in approximation theory. He has authored or edited numerous publications, including Introduction to Approximation Theory, Numerical Mathematics and Computing (with D. R. Kincaid), Approximation Theory in Tensor Product Spaces (with W. A. Light), Approximation Theory III, and Approximation Theory IV.
