ANGELO CORREIA WILL LEAD THE PARLIAMENTARY MISSION IN TIMOR

Thirteen deputies, seven technical aides, six translators and
ten journalists will make up the Portuguese parliamentary
delegation to East Timor.

Angelo Correia, PSD (Social Democratic Party) was today named
by the UN as the leader of 13 deputies wo will commence a
visit to East Timor on 4 November.

The choice of Angelo Correia takes into account his profound
knowledge of the territory. He did military service there
[from 1969 to 1971] and masters the local language, Tetum. He
was appointed head in place of Antonio Sousa Lara who has for
several years been the leader of the Special East Timor
Commission of the Assembly of the Republic. Eduardo Pereira,
PS (Socialis Party) has been designated deputy leader of the
delegation to East Timor; he has been deputy chair of the
Special Commission for several years.

The full list of MPs is as follows: Angelo Correia, PSD,
leader of the delegation, Sousa Lara, Antonio Maria Pereira,
Lemos Damiao, Jorge Paulo and Luis Geraldo, all of the PSD;
Eduardo Pereira, deputy leader, PS, and Raul Brito, Carlos
Candal and Jose Lello of the PS; Miguel Urbano Rodrigues,
Communist Party; Narana Coissoro, Christian Democrats; and
Andre Martins, Greens.

Accompanying the delegation as an official will be Moreira de
Andrade, diplomatic advisor of the President of the Republic,
who was a member of the advance UN team which visited East
Timor earlier this month, and Rui Silva, ex-MP of PRD (the
party of former President Eanes) who is well acquainted with
East Timor and knows several local languages, along with other
technical assistants and six Timorese translators, all
resident in Portugal.

The delegation will leave Lisbon on 2 November and fly to
Singapore via Frankfurt or Amsterdam. In Singapore they will
take a commercial plane supplied by an Australian company with
maintenance provided, if necessary, in Darwin - as this cannot
be guaranteed in Timor.

At Singapore, the delegation will be joined by UN
representatives. There will be a stopover in Jakarta where
Angelo Correia and Moreira de Andrade will be received by the
chairman of the Indonesian parliament for a courtesy call. The
delegation is expected to arrive in East Timor on the evening
of 4 November and will remain there for eleven days.
