Kayaking on the Vistula

30 August 2006

The Vistula is one of the last untamed, meandering rivers in Europe. About 15 km from Warsaw, the river's environment changes strikingly and features a perfectly preserved ecosystem, with a habitat of animals that includes the otter, beaver and hundreds of bird species.

A good starting point for a kayaking trip along the Vistula is the port on the Żerański Canal. Near Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki, where the Vistula merges with the Bug and Narew rivers, the greatest attraction is the Modlin stronghold. The Modlin route is about 36 km long and on the way, kayakers can visit historic sites in Czerwińsk, including a 12th-century Romanesque basilica. Those ambitious enough can follow the Vistula right up to Płock, one of the oldest settlements in Mazovia.

Kayaking on the river's mid-section can be organized by Ekoturyzm, trips can last one or two days. The firm also offers trips of a few days across the Zalew Zegrzyński reservoir, and longer routes along the Rawka, Wkra, Świder and Bzura rivers.
