While Davidson is best known for its academics, the story of Davidson's athletic programs is remarkable as well. Davidson enjoys extremely strong student participation in athletics at the varsity, intramural and club levels.

Varsity
Twenty-one varsity sports programs are offered at the NCAA Division I level. Of these, 11 are men's sports and 10 are women's sports. After adjusting for students participating in more than one sport, nearly one-quarter of the on-campus student s participate in varsity sports.

Davidson's primary conference affiliation is the Southern Conference; however, several different teams are also affiliated with other conferences as well. Football joined the Pioneer League in 2001. Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving joined the Colonial Athletic Conference in 2000. Field Hockey became part of the NORPAC in 2000 and the Lacrosse team is a founding member of the newly formed American Lacrosse Conference.

DJ Athletics feature story

Success on the playing field is but one measure of an athletic program's achievement. Davidson's student athletes have clearly done well in the classroom as well: 97% of scholarship athletes, compared with 90% of all students entering in the fall of 1996, graduated within six years, the standard time frame used by the NCAA. Davidson has won the Southern Conference's Barrett Bonner Award for placing the highest percentage of student-athletes on the league's academic honor roll since the award's inception in 1994.

Intramural and Club Sports
While varsity sports may grab the headlines, there are two other sides of athletic competition at Davidson: intramural and club sports. Currently, Davidson offers six intramural sports and a wide variety in the eighteen student-lead club sports.
