Click (2006) (PG-13)
Since a magical remote control turns out to be the cause of Adam Sandler's problems in his latest comedy, I couldn't help but hope that a real fast-forward button would appear out of nowhere and bail me out of the last 40 minutes. That's because despite an amusing set-up that aims higher than you'd expect from a Sandler comedy, "Click" tunes out with an ending that's sappy, redundant and not nearly as funny as the hour or so that preceded it.
X-Men: The Last Stand (2006) (PG-13)
The third, and supposedly, the final installment of the "X Men" franchise may be prophetically titled "The Last Stand," but that sure didn't stop the filmmakers from throwing in a few nuggets to leave the door open for an "X4."
Maybe they shouldn't have bothered. That's because despite a few well-staged action sequences and the best special effects that a reported $150 million budget can buy, "X Men: The Last Stand" is simply not as well-crafted as its critically acclaimed predecessors -- 2000's "X-Men" and 2003's "X2: X-Men United" -- which together have grossed over $675 million worldwide.
Lady Vengeance (2006) (R)
Park Chan-Wook's "Lady Vengeance" is a masterpiece. The film is as good as anything Alfred Hitchcock ever directed. As a fan of the director's previous films "Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance" and "Oldboy" I had high hopes for this third installment in his Vengeance trilogy. My hopes were filled beyond my wildest imagination. "Lady Vengeance" moved me to tears. It is a powerful film that deserves repeated viewings. I was so pleased to discover three commentary tracks on this DVD. That allowed me four viewings!
Office, The: Season Two (2006) (NR)
NBC's "The Office" is about as close to "must-see TV" as I've ever encountered. In fact, it's the first episodic non-cable network series I've actually gone out of my way to watch each week since I was around the age of 12. Beginning as a mid-season replacement in spring of 2005, and based on the British series of the same name, the sitcom's first season was amusing, though it experienced some noticeable growing pains. The second season is a quantum leap forward, introducing more characters and expanding on the foundation that had already been laid in hilariously interesting ways, while, of course, retaining the same mockumentary format.
Little Mermaid, The: Special Edition (1989) (G)
The long-awaited Special Edition DVD of "The Little Mermaid" is well worth the wait. The modern animated classic revived Disney's waning animation market and marked the beginning of a new cycle of excellent animated films. "The Little Mermaid" set the standard for modern animated films. It combined great characters, excellent songs, humor and audience appeal that spanned the generations. This DVD has been remastered for incredible picture and sound quality. It is a treasure that can be enjoyed for generations.
Dust Devil: The Final Cut (1992) (NR)
"Dust Devil" is one of those horror films that went through a troubled distribution. It was butchered by the producers and released in a number of truncated versions over the years. Miramax was upset that the film was not your run-of-the-mill slasher film and failed to get behind the movie. The director collected the original elements and reconstructed this final cut.
Thank You For Smoking (2006) (R)
"Thank You For Smoking" is the star-making vehicle Aaron Eckhart’s abundant talents have screamed for since his searing performance in Neil LaBute’s “In the Company of Men” almost an entire decade ago. Although a stellar supporting cast surrounds him, this film belongs to Eckhart, who, in the showy role of tobacco lobbyist Nick Naylor (complete with voiceover and all), gets to display his brash, confident and often borderline sleazy charm. It’s the kind of “man’s man” role that fits Eckhart like a glove.
My Name is Earl: Season One (2005) (NR)
My Name is Earl" is the most refreshing and original TV show to hit Network TV in several decades. Oddly enough, considering the TV series includes characters who are thieves, whores and adulterers "My Name is Earl" contains more positive and family values than all the other shows on TV combined. The cutting edge comedy was created by Greg Garcia and is loosely based on his own childhood. Totally wild.
