Crickets' Ramirez, Guerrero among Tex-La League All-Stars

Lubbock Crickets third baseman J.D. Ramirez and pitcher Jose Guerrero were named Texas-Louisiana League All-Stars by the league Wednesday.

Ramirez, who leads the independent baseball league with a .436 average and 58 hits, and Guerrero, a model of consistency on the mound this season, were the Crickets' sole representatives for the game.

The league's third annual all-star contest is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Monday at Dan Law Field.

The Tex-La League All-Stars will play the Crickets in this year's game. Although Ramirez and Guerrero will be introduced as all-stars, both will play for the Crickets in the game.

Amarillo's Jorge Alvarez and Daren Brown as well as Alexandria's John O'Brien were selected for the game for the third consecutive year. Voting on the 21-member team was done by the league's six managers, who were allowed to vote only for players on other teams.

Ramirez has slapped 14 doubles, three triples and four home runs for Lubbock this season en route to 29 RBIs. Guerrero has compiled a 2-1 mark with a 3.54 earned-run average. He has 24 strikeouts and 24 walks in 41 innings of work while holding opposing hitters to a .240 average.

The league-leading Dillas led the way with eight selections.

Outfielders Curt Ford and Lonnie Maclin, shortstop Tim Howard, third baseman Manny Gagliano, catcher Jerry Goff and pitchers Mike Boebert, Daren Brown and Al Kermode all joined Alvarez as Dillas tabbed for the team.

Abilene has five players selected, and Alexandria had three.

O'Brien, a first baseman, was named an all-star the two previous years while playing for Rio Grande Valley.

Rio Grande Valley's Jay Davis and Bryan Warner were named outfielders; Abilene's Scott Bethea was the choice at second base; Alexandria's Kevin Tahan was picked at catcher; Tyler's Chris Cassels was the choice at designated hitter.

Rounding out the pitching staff were Javier DeJesus from Alexandria, and Louis Maberry, George Preston Jr. and Royal Thomas from Abilene.

Amarillo's Glenn Wilson will manage the all-star team.

Tickets for the game will be priced the same as Crickets regular-season tickets ($8.50 for club level seats; $7.50 for lower level reserved; $6 for upper level reserved; $4 for child upper level reserved; $4 for senior upper level reserved; and $5 for general admission).

Some group ticket rates also are available. To purchase tickets or for more information, call 749-2084.

The all-star event will include a Fan Fest '97 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at Dan Law Field. The event is open to all fans who present their all-star game tickets and will feature a home run hitting contest, live entertainment and an autograph session with all-stars.
