Luthier

Francesco Ruggieri (b c1630; d 1698) , Cremona

It was previously assumed that Francesco Ruggieri learned his craft as an apprentice to Nicolò Amati, but there is no evidence to support this claim, and there are certain differences in construction methods that suggest that Francesco may have learned the craft elsewhere. Nevertheless, there is no denying that Amati was Ruggieri's mentor in spirit, if not in fact.

Francesco was the first known violin maker of the Ruggieri family, which lived on the outskirts of Cremona. The Ruggieris were all fine craftsmen and produced many instruments that that are the equal of those from the Amati family, but they must have found it difficult to compete with the luthiers working in central Cremona -- the Amati, Guarneri, and later, the Stradivari families. their clientele was probably dominated by professional musicians rather than the aristocracy.

Most of Francesco's instruments date from the 1660s to the 1690s. And Francesco is generally credited with having invented the smaller cello model, which later, after Antonio Stradivari perfected its form, became the standard. Francesco died in 1698, and the family business passed to his son Vicenzo.
