Buckman returns home as an Austin Toro

Former Longhorn basketball player Brad Buckman is being introduced this afternoon as the newest member of the Austin Toros, the NBA Development League team in his hometown.

Buckman, a McDonald’s All-American from his days at Westlake High School, completed his eligibility at Texas last spring and signed to play pro ball in Greece. But he ran afoul of a drug test, testing positive for a prescription drug for attention deficit disorder.

The Toros have been working clear international contractual hurdles and sign Buckman as one of their two territorial picks — which permit development league teams to sign two players with regional ties.

The Toros’ other regional signee will be Kris Clack, also an Austin high school and Longhorn product.

Dear Gene: Have fun at Michigan State. You are allowed to coach atm and zero-u after you've had a stint in the NFL. It's been a real pleasure knowing you and having you as a mean D-coach.

Texas women ranked 25th in AP preseason poll

The Texas Longhorns are ranked 25th in The Associated Press’ preseason women’s top 25 poll, which was released Wednesday.

The Longhorns, who were ranked No. 12 in last year’s preseason poll, are coming off a 13-15 season where they finished unranked and missed the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1997-98.

Maryland, the defending national champion, was the overwhelming choice as the preseason No. 1, receiving 47 out of the 50 first-place votes.

Three other Big 12 schools are ranked, including No. 3 Oklahoma, which received two first-place votes. Texas A&M is No. 14 and Baylor is No. 19.

The Longhorns, who received 113 points, open the season at the Erwin Center at 7 p.m. Sunday against Maryland-Eastern Shore.

Chizik’s name linked to Iowa State

The Iowa State athletic director has called a press conference this evening to announce major news regarding the football program. Word is that the Cyclones are about to dump head coach Dan McCarney.

Could Gene Chizik, Texas’ co-defensive coordinator, be up for this job, too?

Texas athletics director DeLoss Dodds said Wednesday afternoon that no school has contacted him to request an interview with Chizik.

The Sporting News is reporting that Tim Brewster, a former Longhorn assistant, is the top favorite for the Cyclones. Brewster, who was an extraordinary recruiter, now is an assistant coach with the NFL’s Denver Broncos.

But Chizik, along with Louisiana State defensive coordinator Bo Pelini, are thought to be candidates. The same group of coordinators also has been linked to the vacancy at Michigan State.

Chizik said earlier this week that he will not publicly comment on job prospects. But it’s well known that the 44-year-old coordinator desires a head coaching job, if the right one opens up.

Dodds’ grandson signs to play golf for Texas

Steffan Schmieing has spent his entire life around athletic teams at the University of Texas. On national signing day, the senior golfer from Westlake High School became a Longhorn.

It was hardly a surprise that Schmieding picked Texas. He’s been part of the family.

He is the grandson of Texas athletic director DeLoss Dodds, who’s been known to swing a pretty mean golf club of his own.

Recruiting update

Longhorns basketball coach Rick Barnes hopes to add a fourth recruit to the three who have committed to play for him next season.

Herb Pope, a 6-foot-8 1/2 inch forward from Alquippa, Pa., has a visit scheduled to Austin this weekend. Pope, who has a long list of suitors, is ranked as the 17th-best high school senior in the country by Scout.com. He is capable of playing both forward spots.

The NCAA’s weeklong fall national signing period begins today. Barnes expects to sign three high school seniors: 6-6 Gary Johnson, 6-8 Alexis Wangmene and 6-10 Clint Chapman, all frontcourt players.

The rugged Johnson, from Aldine, is the most highly regarded, rated No. 26 by Scout. Chapman, who is from the Portland, Ore. area, impressed college coaches while playhing Amateur Athletic Union ball during the spring and summer. He is rated No. 49 by Scout. Wangmene, who is from Cameroon and attends Blair Academy in New Jersey, is not listed by Scout among its top 100 players, but Rivals.com rates him No. 64.

Ross named Thorpe Award semifinalist

Senior cornerback Aaron Ross has been tabbed one of 11 semifinalists for the Thorpe Award, given annually to the nation’s best defensive back.

Ross learned the news one day after 2005 Thorpe winner Michael Huff text messaged him, predicting he would win it.

Huff was Texas’ first Thorpe winner and Ross is looking to make it two in a row.

Ross is the fifth Texas defender to be named a semifinalist along with Huff, Nathan Vasher (2003), Rod Babers (2002) and Quentin Jammer (2001). Vasher plays with the Chicago Bears and Jammer plays for the San Diego Chargers. Huff plays with the Oakland Raiders. Ross leads Texas with four interceptions and has 62 tackles, and three forced fumbles. He has been involved in nine takeaways over the last nine games.

Blalock named a Lombardi finalist

Senior right guard Justin Blalock was named one of four finalists for the Lombardi Award Tuesday, an award given to the nation’s top offensive lineman.

Blalock becomes the fourth Longhorn finalist in the last five years, joining Rod Wright (2005), Derrick Johnson (2004) and Cory Redding (2002). Texas has had two past winners with Tony Degrate taking the honor in 1984 and Kenneth Sims in 1981.

Defensive lineman Quinn Pitcock of Ohio State, linebacker Paul Posluszny of Penn State, and defensive end LaMarr Woodley of Michigan join Blalock as finalists. The preseason All-American has made 48 consecutive starts (No. 2 on the UT all-time list) and is part of an offense line that has led the Horns to 39.2 points, which ranks fifth in the NCAA. Meanwhile, Blalock has not given up a sack in his last 25 games.

Head coach Chizik? Not so fast.

Texas co-defensive coordinator Gene Chizik, whose name has been mentioned for every head coaching job from Chapel Hill to East Lansing, said Monday that he won’t publicly discuss his future.

“I’ve got one focus — period,” Chizik said, listing Texas’ upcoming games at Kansas State and Texas A&M as his focus. “Truthfully, I don’t discuss, publicly, any potential job that might come up down the road. That’s something that Coach Brown and I will handle will the time comes.”

Mack’s no Joe Pa

Mack Brown said his surgically repaired knee experienced a breakthrough for the better about 10 days ago. At Monday’s media luncheon, he was clearly walking more easily than in previous weeks this season.

“I’m doing much better,” Brown said, adding that he still has to be careful on the sideline lest he get rolled over by a player. “That sideline is really dangerous. You can lose your knee easier on that sideline than playing in the game.”
