Raven Society Gavel
Each spring the Raven Society elects new officers, including a President. The symbol of
this office--the Society's gavel--is handed down from the past-President to the new
President each year. Although the details have been lost over the years, a small note
taped to the gavel states the following:
This gavel was carved from one of the original timbers of the White House and is
presented to the Raven Society by Thomas K. Fitzpatrick.
In addition to being responsible for this artifact, each year the Raven Society
President travels to Washington, D.C. as a representative of the University of Virginia
and participates in the annual celebration of Mr. Jefferson's birthday at the Jefferson
Memorial.
