Shipdham Bomber Base, 1991
All across England there are abandoned airforce bases from World War II, reverted back to a farms and fields. Looking up from the runway you could almost put yourself in one of those WWII movies -- in a jeep racing up the circular road with the flag pole in the center. I'm glad Mr. Riz felt friendly that day and let me wander around what was left of the 44th Bomber Group base. He said fewer and fewer veterins were still well enough each year to make it over. Fading "nose art" can be seen on what is left of the officers quarters. The more "risque" art is in what were the barracks, now converted into animal pens. The runways are now an airport for private planes and the control tower is a pub where pieces of crashed US and German bombers in glass cases. One day I'll make it over to Normandy.
