Baptisia sphaerocarpa (Fabaceae)
(bap-TIS-ee-ah sphere-o-CAR-pa)
Yellow Wild Indigo

Tough Baptisias are always welcome blooming in the late-spring garden. Neat, rounded 2-3' plants bear erect stems with bright, egg yolk-yellow pea flowers, stacked in upright racemes. With a taproot that goes to China and an iron constitution, this species loves well-drained, lean and gravelly soils. Give Baptisias some time to establish; blooms appear after a couple years of serious root growth. Baptisias are real show stoppers and well worth the time it takes to get them established. This species ranges from Texas north to Missouri and east to Mississippi.
