 Biography and Highlights:

Born: Dec. 15, 1934 in Calne, Wiltshire, England

Resident: Newmarket, England

Family: wife, Maureen

Perennially one of Europe's leading trainers, Brittain has been represented by classic winners in each of the past four seasons, including 1995 Italian Derby winner Luso, 1993 1,000 Guineas heroine Sayyedati, 1992 Oaks and St. Leger winner User Friendly, and Mystiko, winner of the 1991 2,000 Guineas. In 1995, Sayyedati won the Sussex Stakes. She also won the 1993 Prix Jacques Le Marois and the 1992 Cheveley Park Stakes in addition to other group victories

In 1992 Brittain saddled a career high 63 winners, and ranked third among British trainers in stable earnings, behind Richard Hannon and Henry Cecil. He presently has 111 horses in training

Brittain trained his first classic winner in 1978 when Julio Mariner captured the St. Leger. He has since conditioned such internationally noted runners as Sheikh Mohammed al Maktoum's Eclipse Award winning Pebbles, winner of the 1985 Breeders' Cup Turf, 1991 2,000 Guineas winner Mystiko, and 1992 English and Irish Oaks winner User Friendly

Saddled first British-trained winner of the Japan Cup, Jupiter Island in 1986

Brittain's 1985 stable, spearheaded by the brilliant Pebbles, earned more than $1.4 million to establish a single-season earnings record for British trainers. The following year, he shipped the relatively unknown Bold Arrangement to the United States for the classic season, a gamble that paid off to the surprise of many American turf pundits when the colt finished third in the Blue Grass Stakes and second to Ferdinand in the Kentucky Derby. Bold Arrangement later returned to contest both the 1986 and 1987 editions of the Breeders' Cup Classic, finishing seventh and 11th, respectively. In addition to Pebbles and Bold Arrangement, Brittain has saddled previous Breeders' Cup contestants Sayyedati (1993, 12th in the Sprint), Cruise Ship (1987, 13th in the Juvenile), and Love of Silver (1992, 10th Juvenile Fillies)

Brittain joined trainer Sir Noel Murless as a stable lad in 1949 and stayed with him for more than 20 years

First trainer's license: 1972

Began training from Pegasus House Stables in 1972

Moved to Carlburg Stables in Newmarket in 1975

Enjoys watching football and boxing

Favorite racecourses: Sandown Park and York.
