B.C. Wireless

Welcome, to B.C. Wireless

The British Columbia Wireless Network Society is a non-profit, grassroots organization dedicated to building community through Wireless Networks and open technology throughout the Province of British Columbia, Canada.

The Society works to build social awareness, applications and freely accessible community wireless networks through workshops, hands on development, community hotspots and high speed wireless broadband technology. We are not an Internet Service provider, we focus our efforts within the community itself.

What we do

Hotspots and Neighbourhood Networks

We deploy hotspots throughout local communities in places for people to connect and interact through multimedia, telephony and other services, and we need your help!

If you are a business owner or community organization and either run a wireless network or are interested in running a network, please fill out our Hotspot Survey.

If you can spare a few hours a week to help setup hotspots, develop software and services, generally spread the word or you have a project you'd like to work with us on - we want to hear from you.

Digital Divide

We work with various organizations and community members to help bridge the Digital Divide in British Columbia. Through collaboration, we help communities build and maintain sustainable broadband infrastructure to provide a common, neutral groundwork for our citizens to communicate freely and take advantage of Community Network Applications and broadband Internet access.

How you can get involved

We need help from people regardless of technical skills or background. If you have a passion for helping the public good, developing new technologies, meeting new people and helping us build a new network empowered generation please join us by creating a B.C. Wireless account and applying to be a volunteer.

Even if you don't have time to volunteer you can still sign up and set up your own hotspot, hang out in the IRC Channel, tell us places we should unwire, or just tell a friend!

About the B.C. Wireless Web Site

WaveCaster

We've written our own project management and community collaboration system known as WaveCaster. The software provides volunteers with a way to create new working groups, interact via Email and Voice over IP, manage documents, coordinate tasks and track resources including rights of way, networks and a variety of other resources. Using WaveCaster we seek to provide an environment that helps work together together, and preserve knowledge over the long term.

In addition we provide numerous tools to help community network builders.

The Wiki

Our Wiki allows anyone to contribute to our website by allowing anyone to edit the pages at will. If you are new to using a Wiki, we ask that you play in the WikiSandBox before working on other parts of the site.
