Tom Waits isn't exactly popular. Maybe the music you listen to is popular, which is why your opinion feels like blind, ignorant hating. His voice has more emotion and honesty than most music you will ever hear, and the lyrics are just as truthful and uncompromising. Even on an album where he covers Bukowski and Daniel Johnston, he still has the passion to reinterpret them well. I'll take Tom's cover of "Sea of Love" alone over anything else you're listening to, notawriter.

I first heard Tom in 1986, and I just about cried about all the time I'd wasted on this earth not knowing about him. I might as well throw everything else off my iPod, Orphans is all I'm hearing these days.

While in Nashville, I attended a tribute to Tom with local artists doing two songs each. I was floored by the writing. I had let his unconventional delivery prevent me from listening more closely.

Tom Waits is singularly my favorite solo singer/songwriter ever - even used his song "Picture in a Frame" in my wedding. The only thing about "Orphans" that makes me angry is that my wife won't let me buy it because "Christmas is coming!"

Not to overpromote Waits like he's Borat or anything, but if I were running EW, he would definitely get Entertainer of the Year. Tons of people of the new generation have discovered him (myself included), his 2-month tour seemed to be worth it (I luckilyattended Louisville's show), and now a new critically acclaimed 3-disc album (which I'll be buying today)??? PLEASE, give this man something!

Wait's visage should be chiseled onto Mount Rushmore. The man is a national treasure, and very few people seem to know it.

Ben- Mon, Nov 27, 2006 at 1:11 PM EST

Tom continues to be the best songerwriter in America, as he has been for years.

Big Daddy Bull- Mon, Nov 27, 2006 at 10:52 AM EST

Fantastic! How many artists can boast to a career as long as Waits' and still be putting out a creative and interesting product. He is an American treasure! I only wish he would tour more often. We love ya' in the Chi, Tom...come and see us!

Mark- Mon, Nov 27, 2006 at 10:46 AM EST

Hands down, Tom Waits remains the singular voice of American music. Keep 'em coming, Tom
