  • Treatment of Bipolar Mania in Older Adults.
    Interventional study. This study will compare the benefits and side effects of lithium and divalproex in the treatment of older adults with bipolar mania. Ages 60 and up. Locations in Durham, NC; White Plains, NY; Cleveland, OH; Philadelphia, PA; Pittsburgh, PA; Houston, TX.
  • Maintenance Treatment of Bipolar Depression.
    Interventional study. This study will compare two different antidepressant treatment regimens to determine which is more effective in reducing symptoms of bipolar depression. Ages 15 and up. Location in San Antonio, TX.
  • Reproductive Function and Mood in Women With Bipolar Disorder.
    Evaluation study. This study will determine the effect of medication for bipolar disorder on the reproductive function of women. This study will also determine whether mood changes occur during the menstrual cycle in women with bipolar disorder. Ages 18-40. Location in Stanford, CA.
  • Treatment of Early Age Mania.
    Interventional study. This study will evaluate the effectiveness of the medications lithium (Eskalith®), valproate (Depakote®), and risperidone (Risperdal®) in treating children and adolescents with bipolar disorder or symptoms of mania. Ages 6-15. Locations in Washington, DC; Baltimore, MD; St. Louis, MO; Pittsburgh, PA; Galveston, TX.
  • Treatment and Outcome of Early Onset Bipolar Disorder.
    Interventional study. This study will compare the effectiveness in the maintenance of continuing adjunctive atypical antipsychotic medication compared to traditional mood stabilizer(s) alone in the maintenance treatment of adolescents with bipolar disorder. Ages 10-18. Location in Glen Oaks, NY.
  • Relapse Prevention for Bipolar Type-II Disorder.
    Interventional study. This 62-week study will compare the safety and effectiveness of fluoxetine (Prozac®), lithium, the combination of these two medications, and placebo in treating and preventing recurrent depressive episodes in people with bipolar type II disorder. Ages 18 and up. Location in Philadelphia, PA.
