Food on the Lower East Side
The Lower East Side is a great place to eat or shop. This is just a partial list of some of area's restaurants, cafes and food stores. For more ideas, visit the Lower East Side Business Improvement District's Visitors Center at 261 Broome or simply take a stroll: you are bound to find some gems.

Brown

A cozy cafe located a few blocks from The Tenement. Brown's menu features a variety of fresh, organic sandwiches, as well as salads and soups. Brown is also a nice spot to stop and sip coffee drinks, tea, beer or wine.

88 Orchard

El Castillo De Jagua

If you're looking for a crunchy on the outside chuleta (garlicky fried pork chop), melt in your mouth cubano (cuban sandwich), succulent chicken, or maybe just a plate of rice and beans, Castillo de Jagua will transport you to a more tropical place. A perennial staff favorite and a great place to experience the Latino Loisada.

Da Nico's

Using the bricks from his mother's seventy year old wood burning oven to build his own oven, Nicholas "Nico" Luizza serves up pizza and other Italian dishes in this charming restaurant with a back yard. Located in the heart of Little Italy, the restaurant welcomes lunch time guests with an array of specials.

Dumpling House

While it's short on atmosphere and seating, the Dumpling House is one of the undisputed gems of the neighborhood. The $1 plate of fried pork dumplings is a delicious deal, as is the sesame pancake with beef. The Dumpling House also steams up a fine plate of vegetable dumplings.

Katz's Deli

Bring your appetite for pastrami and a sense of history to Katz's because you will be served a helping of both. This huge eatery boast some of the best pastrami sandwiches in the city as well as a dining room that will evoke memories of the good old Lower East Side (when egg creams were a nickel). Noah's Ark (Kosher deli)

A kosher deli located approximately four blocks from The Tenement's Visitor Center & Museum Shop. Noah's Ark serves classic deli sandwiches, including spicy and fatty pastrami, hot meals and vegetable platters. Pho Grand

Located three blocks from The Tenement, Pho Grand features beef noodle soups as well as grilled meats and other Vietnamese specialties. Vietnamese ice coffee, made with condensed milk, is a particularly refreshing caffeine boost on a hot day.

Rosario's Pizza

Enjoy delicious pizza, pasta, calzones, and other Italian specialties at this neighborhood pizzeria. Owner Sal Bartolomeo has been with Rosario's since he immigrated to America at the age of 16, in 1965. And since he tends to work 14 to 16 hour days, you'll probably see him when you go in.

Tiny's Giant Sandwich Shop

Located on the other side of Delancey, but well worth the walk if you want substantial, healthy sandwhiches and salads, including a number of vegetarian items. The whimsical name aside, Tiny's has plenty of seating.

Babycakes

A vegan bakery that specializes in treats that are wheat-free, gluten-free and refined sugar-free. Babycakes' daily roster includes cupcakes, muffins, cookies, brownies, cakes and even frosting shots.

DiPalo Dairy

DiPalo has been serving up fantastic cheeses--including homemade mozzarella and ricotta--and fine Italian meats since 1925. DiPalo's also has a wide assortment of imported olive oils, vinegars and coffee beans, all sold at resonable prices. A great stop for any food lover.

Doughnut Plant

Owner Mark Israel is a doughnut artisan. He has revived and perfected his grandfather's recipe. The result are large, lovingly created doughnuts available in a range of fresh and original flavors--from Valrhona Chocolate to Rosewater. Doughnut Plant also sells coffee and a few other baked goods.

Il Laboratorio del Gelato

Boasting 75 flavors of ice cream and sorbet, the 'laboratory' cooks up all sorts of delicious creations, including (but not limited to): toasted sesame, chocolate hazelnut, white chocolate, pear william, passion fruit, and lemon. For people who like more classic licks, chocolate, coffee and vanilla are staples of the Laboratorio's roster. The store is right next to the museum and has a cool interior perfect for escaping hot summer days.
