The way we worship

Worship services at Gateway Church reflect our understanding of what the Scriptures teach about corporate worship:

• We encourage audible praise to God

"I will extol the LORD at all times; His praise will always be on my lips." (Psalm 34:1)

• We stand when we sing (those able to stand)

"The Levites...stood up to praise the LORD God of Israel, with a very loud voice." (2 Chronicles 20:19)

• We sing both choruses and hymns

"[B]e filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making music in your heart to the Lord…" (Ephesians 5:18-19)

"Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God." (Colossians 3:16)

• We lift our hands

"I will praise You as long as I live, and in Your name I will lift up my hands." (Psalm 63:4)

"Lift up your hands in the sanctuary and praise the LORD." (Psalm 134:2)

"I want men everywhere to lift up holy hands in prayer…" (1 Timothy 2:8)

• Within certain guidelines, we allow worshippers to speak what the Holy Spirit is laying on their hearts

"When you come together, everyone has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. All of these must be done for the strengthening of the church." (1 Corinthians 14:26)

"For you can all prophesy in turn so that everyone may be instructed and encouraged." (1 Corinthians 14:31)

"[A]n hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers. God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth."

Jesus, in John 4:23-24
