As the host unit at Langley Air Force Base, Virginia, the 1st Fighter Wing operates and maintains one of the largest fighter bases in Air Combat Command. Throughout its history, the 1st Fighter Wing has led the way, wherever and whenever called upon. In the 1990s with Operation Desert Shield and Storm, and then in 2003 with Iraqi Freedom, the wing has actively participated in numerous deployments and exercises throughout the world.

LANGLEY AFB, Va -- The 1st Fighter Wing received its last assigned F-22A Raptor Friday when the 94th Fighter Squadron accepted tail number 5085, bringing the total to 40 F-22s to complete the fleet.

At 1:15 a.m. Saudi time, 16 F-15s departed King Abdul Aziz Air Base toward Iraq and helped initiate Operation Desert Storm. While flying a combat air patrol sortie over central Iraq, Capt. Steve Tate, 71st Tactical Fighter Squadron, shot down an Iraqi F-1 Mirage -- the first and only kill of the war credited to the wing.
