ABC News Online publishes news and current affairs items, special online features and news presentations to keep you informed of events and issues from Australia and around the world.

Content is drawn from reports filed by the ABC's reporters and foreign correspondents as well as a number of recognised news agencies. Continuous updates ensure that you can keep up with the latest events and issues in both Australia and around the world.

The News Online site is divided into sections to meet the needs and interests of our users.

The News Home page presents an overview of the latest content and headlines from the major sections.

The major stories of the moment also appear in the Top Stories bulletin.

For those who want to catch the stories as they are published, the Just In page has a continuous 'feed' of stories from all major categories.

Watching Video and Listening to Audio

To access the audio and video on ABC News Online you will need at least the following hardware and software:

Hardware:

  • a sound card and speakers
  • connection to an internet service provider though a 28.8 modem (or better). A high speed connection is required to access broadband content.
  • For PC users: a 486/66 DX system (or better) for audio and a Pentium/75 (or better) for video; running Windows 95, Windows 98 or Windows NT 3.51 or later
  • For Macintosh users: a PowerPC
  • Your system will need at least 8MB RAM to play audio and 16MB RAM to play video.
  • At least 2MB of free hard-disk space

Software:

To access ABC News audio and video you will need software that "plugs in" to your web browser to and allows you to watch multimedia on the Internet almost instantaneously (known as "streaming").

ABC News produces video and audio in both the Microsoft Windows Media Player and RealPlayer formats.

Your web browser may come with one of these programs already installed. If not, the Media Player software is free for both PC and Macintosh systems.

The free RealPlayer is available from Real Networks.

Once you've set up your player, try listening to NewsRadio [WMP] or NewsRadio [Real] which streams news onto the web almost continuously.

Note: if you are are accessing the web through your corporation's firewall you'll need to check with your computer administrator to make sure they've configured the firewall to allow for audio and video access.
