In the same year, European Cultural Months were organised by the cities of Basle and Riga.

2000: An exceptional year

Exceptionally, a total of nine cities were designated in 2000: Avignon, Bergen, Bologna, Brussels, Cracow, Helsinki, Prague, Reykjavik and Santiago de Compostela.
In 2000, the Association of the European Cities of Culture 2000 published a report on the event. This association was wound up at the start of 2001.
