they arent going to change the design of the system until long into its life....tha woul jsut cost more money, and right now they are trying to reduce cost as much as possible, and this isnt going to make it faster or anything......all this means right now is that it is going to cost sony less to make them...

Soul sama, this new processor means absolutely NOTHING in terms of game performance, rest assured, you need not buy a new PS3. However the xbots with their year old 360's and the new Zephyr that will have the new 65 processor NEEDS it because the 360 has A LOT more overheating problems than the ps3, even today. This has nothing to do with game developing either, this is just a hardware cost production standpoint.

Seems to me that Sony has gotten their act together alot more quickly than Microsoft did with the 360. With the 65nm chip starting production and a positive look on the European launch, as well as strong sales continuing in North America and Japan. I have no doubt that we will see a nice little price drop right before the 2007 holiday season.

I think that we don't need a new processor (65nn cell) because the one that ps3 has right now is enough. guys! don't worry about it because KILLZONE 2 n MGS 4 are coming out in a couple months. we will be playing good games while 360fans will be watching us. i can't wait to get my ps3.

This is great news and so soon. Show's Sony's commitment to the PS3. Sony realizes that the price is the biggest obsacle the PS3 has infront of it. WIth a chip reduction and quit possibly an early price reduction (October of this year, intime for thanks giving shoppin season.)Am sure Peter Moore will soon come out sayin something to try belittle this great news.

madcat10 no the processor will be the same specs wise. Only smaller, cheaper and runs much cooler.

I don't see them dropping the price any time soon. This will just help them with the overheads they are already loosing (isn't it like $800 to truly manufacture the PS3?). It doesn't reduce to much heat, only a little. The same is going to happen to the X360 this year to, but again I don't think there will be a big price drop. Smaller NM gets more CPU's on a wafer, so it's more efficient.

damn...really dissapointing. this is really bad news to me, considering i bought my ps3 early on and so quickly it will be deemed "obsolete" within 6 months...i mean, this is all good news and what not, just really not some shit that would reasure the folks who did purchase early like myself. i think it sounds outrageous to go and sell my ps3 for a newer upgraded one, but it seems the most logical solution when these new "versions" are being released. i would hate to see my system catch fire one night...tradically burning some sony fan to death...

RedRedef - posted Wed, 31/01/2007 - 03:09
Really bad news PIMP? it will NOT be obsolete, this smaller processor MEANS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING IN TERMS OF PERFORMANCE. OMFG for the last time. You are out of your mind if you think otherwise. Now the NEW 360 however, if you were in that situation with an old 360, you should be pissed, because they are adding A LOT MORE than just the smaller processor. The PS3 now and the 65nm ps3 will mean absolutely god damned nothing.

Red. Where are you gettng that the Xbox360 will add more to their die shrink? The only thing that the Xbox360 CAN do with the die shrink is unlock the 16 disabled pixel pipelines in the GPU via a firmware update. Now that would be something. But then again. If it's possible, they wont need to die shrink to do it anyways. Regardless. The die shrink for both systems is for cost cutting measures.

Hey RedRedef, Don't mean to piss you off, but I'm a true noob when it comes to proccessors and the like. But mind explaining in a little bit more detail how this doesn't affect the old PS3 owners? You are sure this is just for heating? I've owned a PS3 from the day it came out and I hadn't even noticed any overheating issues, so I hope this is just a cost thing. Anyway yea let me know and thanks, Cid

The nm stands for nanometres. The XXnm is a measure of how many nanometres wide the smallest component part of the transistors on the chip are. They could technically fit more transistors on to a chip the same size as the old one however they won't, they'll make the chip smaller. Therefore they will keep the same processing power on each chip however one will just be physically smaller, meaning they can be cheaper as they use less silicone. It is true that the 90nm chip will produce slightly more heat than a 65nm chip as there is a larger surface area of transistor to emit heat from and they require SLIGHTLY more power to push the current around the circuit however as you mention yourself you have noticed that there is no overheating issues and therefore you have nothing to worry about. There will be absolutely no performance difference between a 65nm PS3 and a 90nm one. When they brought the slimline PS2 out it was no more powerful than the old one, technology had just moved on and they could get the same performance from smaller components and it's the same for the PS3 chip. I have a limited understanding of processors though so if anyone can tell me otherwise please do. Coincidentally Intel announced this week that they will start mass producing 45nm processors this year for their next generation of chip.

The 65nm processor is EXACTLY the same with exactly the same performance in all aspects as the 90nm! The ONLY difference is that its a bit cheaper to produce and that it does produce a bit less heat compared to the 90nm but the computing power is 100% the same! You as a consumer will not notice any difference! Maybe if you measure the temperature of the PS3 vith a thermometer you would notice a slight lower themperature, but thats all! The PS3 does not have any overheating issues with the 90nm version so all you guys that have the 90nm PS3 don't have tho change to the 65nm! If you still feel you have to buy a new one its a mental thing up in your head and not a hoarware thing with the PS3;p I will buy myself a PS3 mars23 regardless to if its a 90nm or a 65nm model;)

You PS3 fangirlz!!! dont you consider yourselfs gamerz! dont you like to play video games???!!!!! well try really hard to see through the haze... I know you have been brained washed... where are all the great games at? what console right now has all the great games? I can only think of one! the 360! while all you PS3 fangirlz are on the sideline WAITING for the next KILLER APP all the 360 folks are gaming on. You guys are missing out on great games coming out. There is no reason to support ANY CONSOLE if there are no games behind it. GAMES ALWAYS MAKE OR BREAK CONSOLES! not the other way around. To think... no real good EXCLUSIVE GAME will come out for the PS3 console until 08 is outrageous! All the games in 07 that you guys are drooling over are also coming for the xbox... along with ALL THEIR EXCLUSIVE TITLES! So tell me... what is your reason for HAITING THE 360 or NOT WANTING TO BUY ONE??? you really dont have any!!! If you all don’t follow where the best games are THEN YOU TRULY ARE NOT “ GAMERZ” but something completely different!

they might not be any good games out yet but the PS3 has only been out for 3 months. the games are comming, but i should expect that from x-box fanboys. i have all 3 of the next gen systems so im not a sony fanboy. each system has their games and if you cant remember the x-box has been out for a while now. and why did ibehardnock2001 post your article it isnt on the topic. stick to the topic next time and dont stray away from it exen though you are a x-box fanboy

I am no xbox fanboy! I am a GAMER. I just love to play the best video games! I was a nintedo fan with the sega/snes wars. I became a Playstation fan with the PS/N64/Saturn wars. I remained a Playstation fan with the PS2/Xbox/Gcube wars. NOW **PRESENTLY*** I am a Xbox 360 fan with the 360/PS3/Wii wars. I am just following the console with the BEST GAMES! now if the PS3 starts making GREAT EXCLUSIVE games I will buy one again ( I already had one but sold it because I had the biggest buyers remorse ever!) frankly I never felt like that when purchasing a console -- other than the Dreamcast.... anyways.... at the end.. isn't that what is all about the GAMES! Can't have a nice shiny expensive box just sitting there collecting dust... now way.

For someone who is calling us Sony fanboys, you must have really gone out of your way finding this site to just to stick up for your 360. Xbox may have three or four good games right now, but only one is an exclusive to microsoft and thats Gears. The other good games like F.E.A.R, Oblivion, GRAW and even Enchanted arms are all coming to the PS3. We're not going to be waiting for too long because we get Virtua Fighter 5 before Xbox lovers, and Heavenly Sword and Lair are only a couple of months away. Once the PS3 exclusive titles start coming out, the 360 will get blown out of the ocean. Final Fantasy XIII/Versus XIII and Metal Gear Solid 4 are good enough reasons for me to never look at a 360 twice. Have you ever compared the two consoles? The PS3 clearly has the edge. Yes a console mostly about the games, but just because the 360 decided to release a rushed console with a shitload of problems as early as they did, I'm not going to buy it. The PS3 has only been out for two months dude. When the 360 first came out, they made such a big deal about NOTHING. What good games did 360 have two months into its release? Perfect Dark Zero? Give me a fucking break. Far as I'm concerned, the next generation didn't start untill the PlayStation 3 came out. This is coming from someone who has now owned all three new consoles (sold my 360, why wouldnt I, PS3 is out now). Oh, last thing... When your 360 is collecting dust in the corner in two years cause you got tired of Gears of War 2 or some crap like that, we'll be playing 50 Gig games that have depth, graphics and length that no 360 game will EVER have.

lol and you dont think the PS3 was a rushed job! c'mon are you serious give me a break... what happened with the rumble feature! what happened with the lack of full scaler functionality! etc... etc... Do you really think "next gen starts when sony say's so" lol... are you serious... how arogant can you be or sony for that matter... dont you realize they lie..lie...lie..lie...lie...lie...lie! about everything they say! I dont go by "if's, or what's, or when's..." I am all about the present... not promises of something! c'mon dude! you are preaching games that are not even out yet! with only SCREEN SHOTS TO GO BY! I did not even look at the 360 the first year! only when x box started to crank out games did I buy one! I will not even look at the PS3 until sometime next year given the fact that none of the real good exclusive titles that you talk about... (That I loved on the PS1, PS2) wont come out until 08! So while I play the best games right now! your shiny new box is collecting dust for the next year and a half! ITS ALL RELATIVE BRO! Weak argument!

Well to adivse you "ibehardnock2001" it's best to look at any game console-before, during, and after it comes out.Not to mention as we all know how bad microsoft spooned all micro. lovers in the ass, with the 360. The ps3 with all due respect is perfect and is at the best suitable price it should be at right now, though expansive. But looking and analysing statistics overall outcome ps3 beats 360 with a 100 folds over. PS3 came out with HDMI w/ reality synthesizer and 360 has a custom ATI processor.... sounds like a labtop to me! Anyways the hard-drive that all 360 fans say HD screw blu-ray lmfdaol. 360 had a dual layer hard-drive/ while the ps3 had blu-ray newly intruduced technology, not to mention higher resolutions for all ps3 games to 1080p, xbox360 doesn't have games up to 1080i, maybe not very sure for now but majority are 480 and 720p's. Now back to the the microsoft screwing you 360 fans over is that, machines that get upgarded with full extent meaning with power quality and graphic etc..etc.. should come about 5 to 8 years later, to see a HUGE drastic change. Yet when ps3 came out microsoft went back adding HDMI and better hardware to compete. Not to mention the money management fraud they've been tring to hide from us about there gaming division; which is a whole different concept and discussion I'm tring to stay general. The problems that people have reported with ps3, it's that European sony industries on'let malfunctioning poductions mistakenly, and stopped it; which also included the delay of stocks of ps3's but people with the first batched ps3's they can return them by sony warrenty as well it is also extended because they were experimentals, though; I've hadn't heard any complaints about any of them around my area. If any honorable gamers out there like to talk to understand anything plz do ask, and if anyoen wants more information commit-message me and I'll give you more intel. I do have moer information to talk about but I'll post in a later time.. Thank you for your co-operation in reading - Tony tha TIGGA
