Privacy Policy

The Muni website does not use "cookies", small data files written to your hard drive, on the pages created for sfmuni.com. Some services we link to on our website are provided by other sites; we have no control over their use of "cookies".

We also do not keep track of a site visitor's own personal information, but we will receive data about general traffic to the Muni website. This type of information includes which browsers and Internet Service Providers ("IP Addresses") are used, which pages are visited, where visitors enter and exit from our site, what paths are followed through our site, what searches are performed, browser and monitor settings, etc. This type of information will help us improve the site by giving us insight into how people use our site. Again, this is general aggregate information and will not be used to identify a particular visitor to the Muni website. However, it may also be used for security purposes. It may also be a public record.

Please be aware that your communications with the department through electronic mail, including any information that automatically accompanies such message or that you insert into the message, may be subject to disclosure under public records laws. In addition, the City reserves the right to forward any such communications, or information contained in the communications, to the appropriate law enforcement or governmental authorities where the City determines that such action may be necessary to prevent harm to persons or property or to help facilitate an investigation of fraud, intellectual property infringement, piracy, criminal activity, or other unlawful activity, provided that any disclosure of information is not prohibited by state or federal law, including the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

Procedure for email commendations and complaints about specific incidents:

A commendation or complaint is received by PSR Staff via telephone, letter, walk-in, email, or Muni website, and as much of the following information as is available and applicable is taken down to process the commendation or complaint: a) Occur Date - date incident happened; b) Occur Time - time of incident; c) Location - where incident happened; d) Line/Route #; e) Direction of Travel; f) Vehicle #; g) Employee ID# or Name, if available; h) Description of Employee; i) Description of Complaint; j) Customer Information.

If a complaint is submitted, customer information is necessary to ensure that the Muni employee is charged with the appropriate rule violation (as per MOU contract with employee union).

All complaints are entered into the PSR database and distributed to the appropriate operating divisions for investigation and resolution. Copies are also sent to other Muni departments when the PSR involves non-operator issues such as bus maintenance.

A letter response acknowledging receipt of complaint is sent to the customer. If a hearing about the employee is necessary, the customer will be notified. The customer must attend the hearing for the complaint to be carried forward.

Procedure for email sent to the Executive Director of the SFMTA:

Email sent to the Executive Director of the Municipal Transportation Agency comes into the Director's office. All emails are taken seriously and will receive a response within a few weeks, depending on the complexity of the issue. The Executive Director takes your concerns seriously and relies on your input to improve Muni services.

Procedure for email sent to the Muni Webmaster about the Muni site:

All mail that relates to the website is handled by the Muni Multimedia Services Department. Inquiries are responded to on a first-come, first-serve basis. If mail arrives in the Muni Webmaster's mailbox that can be more appropriately handled by another department, that mail will be forwarded to the proper department.

Procedure for email sent regarding general comments and questions about Muni:

The mail comes to the Community and Public Relations Department for processing. Staff will investigate and respond to all inquiries. Depending on the complexity of the request, it can take 7-10 days to generate a response.

By using the Muni website, you acknowledge that information will be obtained as specified in the "Privacy" section. We will post any changes in our Privacy policy on this page, in order to keep you informed about what information we collect and how that information is used.

Bulk and Repetitious Email Policy

Please be advised that submission of five (5) or more of the same email from the same non-City email address to Muni staff via this website within a seven day period shall be filtered.  Muni reserves the right to filter bulk and repetitious emails that are burdensome to the email system.

You are welcome to link directly to any page on our website as long as you only use a text link. If you want to use our trademarked logo, that requires a written contract with the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency.

We do not link to commercial enterprises that do not have a contract with the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency to provide transportation-related services or administration-related Web services to the SFMTA. A link does not qualify as such a service. Selling our fare media does not qualify unless you are selling such fare media online, which requires a written contract with the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency.
