Mobile Distillery to unveil Celsius 4 at 3GSM

According to a press release, Java mobile porting software company Mobile Distillery will be unveiling version 4 of its Celsius Java ME porting and optimizing software solution at 3GSM 2007, which takes place in Barcelona, Spain from February 12–15.

Celsius is aimed at developers and publishers of Java ME mobile applications and "addresses the time and expense associated with the porting of applications to more than 350 mobile devices." With Celsius, Mobile Distillery aims to dramatically reduce porting time and subsequently accelerate time to market by a factor of two to three, resulting in significant cost savings and a more competitive edge for their customers.

The ability to develop Flash-like applications directly portable to 550 handsets, while increasing the quality of mobile applications by using "high quality" images, sounds, music or data is but one of the features in the new version. It also includes the ability to access U.S. Brew phones in native Brew format using the same Java ME Source Code and access to fully connected applications, from SMS to Http, via BlueTooth or Near Field Communication (NFC).

"A typical mobile application developer needs to adapt his application to one new phone every two days. Celsius makes the porting cycle far simpler by reducing time-to-market costs and the development-porting-testing time required," said Mobile Distillery co-founder and general manager Vincent Berge. "With the turn-key Celsius v4 solution, mobile developers can focus on their added value, while accessing a new range of mobile applications in a few clicks."

Rumor: Zune Phone? Because the Zune wasn't enough.

Posted Feb 01, 2007 at 10:44PM by Ian C.

There are rumors that say that in order to counter Apple's iPhone, Microsoft is working on plans to develop its own Zune-branded cellular phone.

.

..

...

Lemme guess, you used that little pause right there to scratch your heads huh? We did, too. Despite Microsoft's Zune meeting little fanfare, and as oddball as a Zune phone sounds right now, this rumor is actually a bit dated. However, Blake Robinson of CrunchGear - the folks who first broke the story - gives this old rumor new life by saying that "This information is as definite as tips can be."

Here's the other things that the CrunchGear report had to say about the Zune:

Connectivity is the major concern of the device. It is said that it will be able to sync with the Xbox 360 and stream video from the system to the phone via a wireless data connection. This would be pivotal in Microsoft's proliferation of its media ambitions. Not only does it already have millions of 360s in homes capable of downloading movies, it'd be able to distribute those videos directly to its phones.

Sigh. As attractive as that sounds, the rumored Zune phone has to do a little more than just sync with your Xbox 360 in order for it to at least put up a fight with the Apple iPod. It has to withstand pressure from competition. It has to be able to conserve battery power, it has to have decent to large storage capacity, and most importantly it should be affordable.

If this rumor is to be believed, it looks like Microsoft is trying to salvage the Zune brand by turning the Xbox 360 into a super heroine of sorts. Yeah. We like to think of our consoles as cute action console-tans.

Meizu M8: iPhone twin

After just a few weeks since Steve Jobs unveiled the iPhone, it seems like it already has a Chinese look a-like, and a beefy competition at that. Chinese company Meizu, who has found their niche in making mp3 players, has concocted a cellphone called M8, which has an uncanny resemblance to the iPhone.

It has a smaller 3.3 screen which has a 720 x 480 resolution. It also has touch screen functionality like the iPhone, is powered by a ARM11 processor and runs on Win CE 60 OS. Aside from that, it also has Bluetooth, a TV-out feature, and what appears to be two integrated cameras - a three megapixel cam at its back and a 0.3 megapixel at the front.

We still don't have any info about its price tag and availability. But we're betting that it would be cheaper than the iPhone. Anyhow, we'll update you about this as more info comes our way.

N-Gage II development in full swing now

Nokia has been rumored to re-enter the handhelds game market for quite a while now. There are a lot of hushed talks about it, but the giant mobile phone manufacturer has been playing mind games with both the competition and consumers as well. Apparently all those end today.

Online site Pocket Gamer mentioned that Nokia actually held a top-secret workshop for publishers and developers in Santa Monica last week. Accordingly, the company unveiled N-Gage II for the first time in the said workshop and provided the attendees with its technical aspects.

A lot of analysts actually credit the original N-Gage's failure to lack of games but if these attendees are serious on making games for Nokia, then we're sure that there will be hell to pay for Nintendo and Sony. Those who were at the workshop are as follows:

Disney, Sega Of America, Sony Online Entertainment, Universal, Square Enix, Capcom, THQ Wireless, Glu Mobile, Digital Chocolate, EA Mobile, Tecmo, Namco, Vivendi Games, and first party developers Backbone Entertainment and Foundation9.

Furthermore, Nokia explained how next-gen N-Gage games will be distributed as well as something called the "N-Gage activation code system." Would-be publishers are also said to be able to track and manage their own games. The on hand publishers also got their own SDKs as well. And so, is 2007 going to be the year the handhelds console war begins anew? This is going to be exciting.

Gates talks gaming at Vista launch

A few days ago we reported on the different launch parties that were going on around the world to celebrate the release of what's set to be the world's next most popular Operating System, and today we bring you coverage from the Vista launch at the British library in the UK.

Windows is everywhere: from your home, to work, to entertainment; you just can't get away from it. Windows Vista is the successor to Windows XP and is supposed to be more efficient, more secure and more reliable than it's predecessor. But according to Bill Gates himself at the London shindig, we can expect much more from Vista that will shape the future of gaming.

Mr. Gates said, "Today is a big day, and it's really the start of something different," proceeding to comment on the future of games in Vista, the Operating System which will allow us to "play games that are of a whole new level of realism and connecting up with other people around the world". He talked about the developer tools which will be available for Vista will 'empower' the software industry, giving them the ability to create high quality software at low prices. He concluded by saying "We're unleashing people's creativity and we're excited about what can happen."

This speech appears to have been made in response to the Vista compatibility questions that have sprouted up all around the internet, but if Microsoft get this right it could be the sale of the century. Developer tools in Vista are going to be one of the huge factors in the development of games in the future.

Developers are only as good as the tools they can use to create their games, and with the use of extensive information and documents Gates has promised devs, we should be seeing more huge games with amazing graphics that challenge the boundaries between reality and virtual reality. We could even see a game better than World of Warcraft.

Corelane busts out five new games

Corelane's a relatively new game developer for mobiles and consoles, created by the peeps from Lankhor. They've just busted out five of their mobile titles and are currently looking for publishers so we'll probably see these games on our mobiles soon. First one is Bloody Moon, a mobile adventure RPG game. It's pretty much like Corelane's other RPG title, Opal's Quest. There aren't any screens yet but we'll keep you posted.

Here's something for mobile race lovers, Voodoo Kart. No, we don't think there are any pin cushion dolls in this game. No voodoo shamans either - Well, except maybe for that weird-looking green driver on one of the screens. Scenery's nice, too. From totems and giant skulls to pirate ships and giant rib bones.

Elemental is a bit of a puzzle game where you guide a ball through four elemental worlds: water, earth, wind, and fire (no, not the group). Players will gather green and red pills to unlock the other worlds.

See the rest of the games after the jump!

Gameloft, a leading publisher and developer of video games for mobile phones, today announced the launch of America's Army: Special Operations, the first official mobile game of the U.S. Army.

Created in partnership with the U.S. Army, the game lets players assume the roles of U.S. Army personnel from Apache helicopter pilot to infantry Soldier to armored vehicle commander. America's Army: Special Operations features authentic U.S. Army weapons and vehicles including Apache helicopters, Strykers, M4A1 rifles, and Stinger missiles.

"We have worked closely with Gameloft to create a fast-paced military action game worthy of the America's Army name," said Colonel Casey Wardynski, project director of the America's Army project. "In keeping with our PC and console titles, America's Army: Special Operations embodies the high levels of attention to detail and realism that have made America's Army the definitive title for games about the U.S. Army."

According to Gonzague de Vallios, Gameloft's VP of Publishing, real videos of the U.S. Army were studied to create all the animations and graphics in the game. The missions that players have to complete also borrow from real Army operations, with mission objectives ranging from neutralizing a radar station to combat search and rescue.

More than 8 million people have already downloaded the PC version of America's Army. The mobile title is available in 70 countries through 160 telecom operators and 150 partners and has been adapted to 600 different cell phone models.

Microsoft Vista upgrades are for upgrade only

Many enthusiasts of the PC and those who have come to be (reluctantly?) reliant on Bill Gates' money grabber are probably waiting for Vista's release this coming January 30 with a bang.

Some of you have your eyes pretty much set on the upgrade versions of the editions coming out, huh? Remember the good ol' days when you could use your trusty upgrade key to start a completely new installation? All it took was an authentic installation CD of a previous version of Windows and voila! You don't even have to have the previous version installed to start the new OS setup. Now you remember? Well that is now all GONE.

Yep. The ol' misers of Redmond thought it would be best to stick to one machine licensing even after addressing armies of customers having quibbles about the difficulty they undertook to upgrade their machines and reactivate Windows XP every step of the way (well, not really, but hey, it feels like that sometimes).

Microsoft's Knowledge Base info (KB930985) specifically states that "you cannot use an upgrade key to perform a clean installation of Windows Vista." Why? Well that's because the all-new, all-powerful Vista has revealed its first Achilles' heel: compliance checking.

That said, it would be wise for all those customers hoping for a smooth upgrade from their old Windows to the new Vista to simply order a license to allow the user to make a clean installation. Maybe it's a tactic to get everyone to shell out money for the Ultimate edition, since it does not have this limitation. The editions that the limitation does apply for are:
Way to dampen the spirit, eh?

Kutaragi heads new Sony-Namco Bandai venture

Posted Jan 28, 2007 at 01:00PM by Ryan A.

Listed in: Cellular News

Tags: Sony, Ken Kutaragi, Namco Bandai, Cellius Inc.

It is no secret that Sony's relationship with third party developers isn't the best and smoothest of relationships. During the time when the PlayStation 3 was still boxed up, there were some reports that Sony was pressuring devs to release games immediately even though they were not yet entirely finished.

Regardless if those are true or not, Sony came up with a decision that will put away those hushed talks for good. The company recently teamed up with Japan's Namco Bandai to put up a new venture called as Cellius. The main task of the new company is to develop games that will exploit the advanced capabilities of PS3's Cell processor.

What's most interesting about this is that Mr. Ken Kutaragi himself will lead the new company. While he will continue serving as chairman of SCE, Kutaragi will also man the executive director post for Cellius. Furthermore, Cellius is 51% owned by Namco Bandai and the remaining ownership belongs to Sony. Also, it was mentioned by one Sony representative that Cellius will also be designing software for regular PCs, handheld devices, and mobile phones.

Well, this could mean big for Sony. The PSP for example, as great as it is, is kind of lacking in the games department. Nokia on the other hand, has been threatening to re-renter the games market. But more importantly, we all know that main competitor Microsoft has been big lately on the connection between X360 and operating system Vista.

There's only one thing we could derive from this development. It is as if Sony is telling others to "bring it." And in the end, this is going to be good for all of us.

Now obviously, this is tagged as rumor since we don't have any official word from Motorola yet. They seem to be revelling in the stir that their silence is bringing about. Oh well. Anyhow, the slide phone appears to be rather sleek, and the front-facing camera is a dead giveaway as to its 3G character. Interesting, eh?

So, just keep it posted here for more details -- when they do come around, that is.

In the U.S.A., Cingular would be its exclusive distributor. In Canada, Rogers seems to have secured that exclusive contract which could equate to lotsa profits. Apparently, there has been no public statement made yet by either Rogers or Apple, but the communications giant has already been sending emails to customers. E-mails which contain the following:
Since Canada is part of North America, could it be that the iPhone will launch in Canada at the same time as in the U.S.A.? Well, we all know that Apple speculations are a dime a dozen. Anyway, there's no word yet on the iPhone's pricing in Canada or what kind of contract might Rogers have for the iPhone. Rest assured that we'll keep you posted about this matter.

Gamespot reports that the Sony Ericsson SO703i will be released in Japan preloaded with a mobile version of the beloved PSP "joy-fest" of a game, Loco Roco.

The SO703i is also known as the "smell'O'phone" due to a series of interchangeable fragranced "aroma sheet" faceplates, which smell when the user opens up the phone. Another thing about the phone worth mentioning is that the display of the phone utilises some of the technology already implemented in Sony's Bravia HDTVs. The cellphone will be available on the NTT Docomo network.

Sony has yet to confirm if LocoRoco will also grace Sony Ericsson phones in Europe and the US. Moreover, there is still no word if a custom LocoRoco faceplate will be available. We've always wondered what that yellow blob of joy smelled like.

Though quite superficial, there's no denying that being thin is one of the most sought after physical quality. So we guess, the same goes for our today's technology especially for cellular phones.

It would be remembered that a couple of months ago, Samsung came up with a record-breaking 6.9 mm thin model, the Samsung X820. Now, there have been rumors going around that the company improved on the mentioned model by shedding off another millimeter.

While the exact model for this phone hasn't been announced yet, enthusiasts are referring to it as Samsung Ultra Edition 5.9. Some of the new phone's exciting features are listed below. Also, the phone is expected to be announced this coming February in a 3GSM show in Barcelona. If all plans go well, it should be available in the market by March.

Fake your way out of bad situations with MobileFaker

Ah, more news from the cellular provider world, and this time it's not going to leave a bad taste in your mouth. Promise. Unless maybe it gets used against you.

See, Sprint has just launched a new service being introduced by Moderati. Called MobileFaker, this service is designed to help you save face while allowing you to escape from social situations that you might otherwise be forced to endure.

Stuck in a bad date? MobileFaker can save you with escape tools like the "faux calls" function. Being pestered by an annoying loser with bad facial dandruff and an ever-present wedgie? Give him your "faux number."

OK, it sounds more like a social shield than a social weapon, but MobileFaker also has other fun features like pick-up lines and put-downs. It even has a fake breathalyzer and a Get Hip Quick feature (yeah, we wonder how that works too).

Mobile Faker is available as a JME application on Sprint Nextel under the Applications > Entertainment menu on the handset, with support for more carriers and platforms currently in the works.

Phone thief wowed by understanding victim, returns phone

Here's a somewhat touching story to warm your hearts. Touched by the text messages sent to him by one of his victims, a thief returned all the belongings he took from that person and made a promise to repent.

The Xinhua news agency said that Pan Aiying, a teacher from China's Shandong province, had her bag snatched by a motorcycle-riding thief last Friday. The bag contained her phone, bank cards and 4,900 yuan (US$ 630). Using her colleague's phone, she decided to send messages to her phone in an attempt to persuade the thief to return her belongings.

Her first message to the thief read, "I'm Pan Aiying, a teacher from Wutou Middle School. You must be going through a difficult time. If so, I will not blame you." This didn't get a response, however, but she kept on trying. 21 times, in fact.

Perhaps one of the more striking of her 21 messages is this gem:

Keep the 4,900 yuan if you really need it, but please return the other things to me. You are still young. To err is human. Correcting your mistakes is more important than anything.

It seemed the thief had a heart as well. She woke up on Sunday morning and discovered her belongings on the front doorstep, with nothing taken. The text messages seemed to have affected the thief deeply, as he even left a note for Pan:

Dear Pan: I'm sorry. I made a mistake. Please forgive me... You are so tolerant even though I stole from you. I'll correct my ways and be an upright person.

Portable solar power for your laptop, iPod

Are you a Mac aficionado who just so happens to think that searching for alternative energy sources - i.e. the sun - is the only way that us humans can hope to extend our stay in this big bad galaxy? If so, then you better hope you have US$ 180 to spare. According to Treehugger.com, that's the estimated cost of the home-made, portable solar kit that Pat, a blogger from Will Blog For Experience, used to power his MacBook. Here's what Pat himself said:

This kit weighs about 2 lbs, costs $180, and will power my Macbook for 1.75 hours (1.83ghz, browsing the web and checking email via Airport Extreme, bluetooth off, screen brightness about 70%) with a little more than 5 hours of good sun.

Frankly, this gadget is one hell of a good idea. An initial expenditure of a hundred and eighty bucks seems like a pretty big amount, but just the thought of how much we'll be able to save in the long run certainly has an appeal, plus, when folded, the whole thing really seems quite easy to lug around. And it's not just for MacBooks and other laptops, too. We reckon you can use this portable power source for a whole host of other gadgets. Check it out for yourself. Images of the environmentally-friendly doodad are available below.

Cellphone cancer still could be real

Darn, just when the Danish scientist screened 420,000 people to conclude that cellphones do not fry your brain cells or cause cancer, one European study found a slight association between the risk of brain tumors and using a mobile phone for more than 10 years.

Professor Lawrie Challis, a world expert on mobile phone radiation, feels that cellular phones could turn out to be the cigarettes of the 21st century. He is currently on the final stages of negotiation with the mobile phone industry and the Department of Health in London to go ahead with a £ 3million (almost US$ 6million) study. This time around, the effects are expected to be observable after the 10-year mythical limit and could grow dramatically.

After many other studies into the cellphone-cancer issue, many have simply turned up negatively concluded or "probable". And because there still remains that "probability", there will always be a chance another follow up study would re-investigate into the myth.

And what a puzzle this myth is, eh? We wonder if DCA works on brain cells...

Kuju leaving mobile market

Tags: UK, Kuju Entertainment, Kuju

In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Kuju Entertainment boss Ian Baverstock revealed that the company is moving away from mobile gaming. Baverstock pointed towards the "tight stranglehold" operators have on the market as the main reason for their decision, saying that said operators "seem to have no interest in developing it as a market."

"We're increasingly stepping away from mobile, we've found it a difficult market, one where it's hard to make money," said Baverstock. "There was too little development money and the retail income just didn't build like we'd hoped it would. There are people who are making money and doing a good job, but it wasn't for us."

Kuju has already sold its mobile publishing division. Its mobile development business is "pretty much shut down now", according to Baverstock. He also said that the current situation in the mobile gaming market will have to undergo some drastic improvements for Kuju to move back in. "Mobile is a pretty flawed model right now. Not enough money is spent, there's too much porting and testing required and the games are often poor quality."

Fans of Kuju games still have a lot to look forward to, though. Kuju's six UK studios will continue to focus on PC and console games and, following a recently announced share deal, the company is now looking to expand.
