A different perspective:
Vaniman, the acrobatic photographer

The State Library of New South Wales is fortunate to have the world's finest and most extensive collection of photographic panoramas by Melvin Vaniman, an American adventurer, singer, balloonist and photographer. Vaniman had a passion for taking photographs from unusual vantage points such as ship's masts and balloons. A different perspective: Vaniman, the acrobatic photographer, displayed the remarkable photographic prints which Vaniman took on his travels throughout NSW, Queensland and Victoria. They highlight his skill in creating visually interesting and informative images.

The Library's Curator of Photographs, Alan Davies, put together this exhibition of 21 black and white platinum prints, taken between 1903 and 1904, with the help and meticulous research of Alan Tierney, who gave freely of his knowledge and expertise.

This exhibition was proudly supported by the State Library of New South Wales Foundation.
