"An Architect
Takes Care of a Stone Garden in a City of Water"/Hannu
Pöppönen, Helsingin Sanomat 10 September, 2006 On
10 September - 19 November 2006, Marco Casagrande is participating
in the architecture biennale already for the third time - this time
in Venice representing Taiwan. The peaceful Taiwan pavillion is
situated beside the Saint Marcus Square in the renaissance palace of
Palazzo delle Prigioni. Both Taiwanese and Finns have contributed
towards the building of the pavillion. Casagrande's works have
acquired a lot of attention and, because of the Taiwan pavillion,
Architectural Review and New York Times have already contacted him.
Besides the pavillion in Venice, Casagrande is well-known in Taiwan
because he has built kitchen gardens and an effluent treatment
system for Treasure Hill - an area inhabited by warveterans and
situated in the middle of Taipei. Treasure Hill has also provided
ideas for metropolises' cleaning projects. Thus, Casagrande is
planning to import Finnish environment technology solutions into
Taiwan in order to solve growing ecological problems related to big
cities.
Republic of China
Celebrates Its 95th Anniversary on Tuesday 10 October, 2006
The Republic of China was
established in 1911 to replace the over 2,000-year-old imperial rule
of China. The Government of the Republic of China relocated to the
island of Taiwan in 1949 after Mainland China fell to the Chinese
Communists. On Tuesday 10 October 2006, the Republic of China
celebrates its 95th anniversary. The date originates from the
uprising that started against the Qing Dynasty in Wuchang in the
middle of China on 10 October 1911, after which the Republic of
China was established. Taipei Representative Office in Finland is
closed exceptionally on that day.
