Anti-Trust Panel to Examine XM-Sirius Merger

(Washington, DC) - Tomorrow, the House Judiciary Committee will officially establish its Anti-Trust Taskforce, chaired by Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers, Jr. (D-MI), at 10:15 A.M. in 2141 Rayburn. The panel will then address the recently proposed XM-Sirius Radio merger at its first hearing tomorrow afternoon, at 3 pm in 2141 Rayburn.
“This panel will focus on a number of antitrust and competition issues, beginning with the proposed XM-Sirius Radio merger,” Conyers said. “With increasing consolidation in so many sections of our economy, it is all the more important that Congress exercise great oversight in this area. The task force is designed to bring that focus to this critical area.”
In addition to Conyers, the Democratic Members are: Reps. Howard Berman (CA), Rick Boucher (VA), Zoe Lofgren (CA), Sheila Jackson-Lee (TX), Maxine Waters (CA), Steve Cohen (TN), Anthony Weiner (NY), Artur Davis (AL) and Debbie Wasserman-Schultz (FL).
Republican Members are: Ranking Member Steve Chabot (OH), Deputy Ranking Member Ric Keller (FL), Ex-officio Ranking Member Lamar Smith (TX) and Reps. James Sensenbrenner (WI), Bob Goodlatte (VA), Chris Cannon (UT), Darrell Issa (CA), J. Randy Forbes (VA), and Steve King (IA).
The confirmed witnesses at tomorrow’s hearing are: Sirius Radio CEO Mel Karmazin, David Rehr of the National Association of Broadcasters, Mark Cooper from the Consumer Federation, Gigi Sohn from Public Knowledge and Charles Biggio, a partner in Antitrust and Trade Regulation with Wilson, Sonsini, Goodrich and Rosati.
