Tal-Handaq (Liceo Vassalli) Celebrations

Throughout 2005 many of our members have returned to Malta and the Royal Naval  School Tal-Handaq, either as individuals or as members of organised groups representing their particular eras.  For some it will have been their very first visit for many years or even decades, for others it has become a regular event in their social calendars.  The headmaster and staff of Liceo Vassalli, the school now on site, are always very happy to see us and are very welcoming.

In a recent e-mail response to Viv, Mr Marc Spiteri, English Master at Liceo Vassali, commented on the overwhelming enthusiasm and nostalgia we all have for the time spent at the school in our youth.  He said, "Going back to school tomorrow will be a totally different experience!  How many memories, how many stories have walked along Tal-Handaq's lanes.  Sometimes we at the school just don't appreciate it enough."

Iolanthe - 2000In 2005/2006 Liceo Vassalli celebrates the 25th anniversary of the inauguration of their school at Tal-Handaq and, as part of their celebrations, some of the material and displays will reflect on the previous use of the site by the RN School Tal Handaq.  In recent weeks Viv has completed a long-term project collecting, scanning and collating all the material we have on the various productions that took place on the stage in the school hall between 1950 and 1978.  After this long and laborious labour of love, which included scanning through every school magazine since the early 1950s, Viv compiled an excellent historic document which is supported by a CD of associated photographs and drawings.  This document and copies of some production 'programmes' were sent to Marc Spiteri in support of the forthcoming Liceo Vassalli celebrations and for inclusion in the historical archives of the school library.

The school is also preparing an exhibition and plans to include some memories and anecdotes of past staff and pupils from the Royal Naval School in their annual school magazine.  The Committee have already supplied some material and have agreed that Mr Spiteri may use items from the many pages of interest shown on the Tal-Handaq - Common Room site.  We will also provide high-resolution photographs where appropriate.  However, we would love to hear from you, with your personal reflections and memories of life at the school, supported by 'historic' documents or photographs (material can be scanned or photocopied).  Viv has agreed to collect and collate all the information received, before forwarding to Marc Spiteri for inclusion in the editorial that he is preparing on behalf of Liceo Vassalli.

Time is short so please trawl through your ‘memory banks’ and your RN School memorabilia as soon as possible and
contact

Malta Visit - July 2005

Bruce Williams (57-60) returned to the RN School Tal Handaq for a second visit in July 2005.
His visit included all his old form rooms, the School Hall, the Admin Block and the Drama room.
.  He says it was an excellent visit during which he took another couple of hundred photos and has added about 150 photos so far.
He will be adding about 30 or 40 a month and there are 3 new 360 degree panoramas to go on,
however they take a bit of work so probably won't be on the site until late September 2005.
The site also includes a few personal recollections of his era.
