No committee to develop ties with Lahore’s twins

LAHORE: Lahore has been twinned with 11 cities over the last 31 years but no government has set up a committee to implement provisions of the agreements signed with these cities. Four cities have been twinned with Lahore under nazim Mian Amer Mahmood. Glasgow is the only city working on enhancing the ties between the two cities. It has offered training facilities to the Rescue 1122 officials besides donating firefighting vehicles. Istanbul was the first city twinned with Lahore in 1975. The second twin-city agreement was signed with Sari Won, a city in the Democratic Republic of Korea, in 1988. There has been no exchange of delegations between the two cities. The Chinese city Xian was linked with Lahore in 1992. In 1993, Lahore was twinned with Kortrijk – a city in Belgium. Mian Abdul Majid, the then Lahore mayor, signed the agreement. Mian Muhammad Azhar, in his capacity as the governor, inked twinning agreements with Moroccan city Fez in 1994. Spanish city Cordoba was twinned with Lahore in 1994 under the supervision of AU Saleem, the then MCL administrator. Uzbek city Samarkand was twinned in 1995 under Javed Malik, the MCL administrator. District nazim Mian Amer Mahmood entered into the twin city relationship with Iranian cities Isfahan and Mashad in 2004 and 2006 respectively, Glasgow, UK, in 2006, and Chicago, USA, in February 2007. A CDGL official told Daily Times that several cities such as Glasgow had a separate wing to ensure implementation of twining agreements. “These cities vigorously pursue sisterly relations,” the official said. He stressed the need for forming a committee to develop relations with twinned cities. Mahmood said the CDGL was considering a proposal to set up two committees. He said local representatives would be included in the committees. mansab dogar
