Diallo family agrees to $3 million settlement
Four years after four police officers responsible for the shooting of Amadou Diallo were cleared of criminal wrongdoing in the West African immigrant's death, the slain man's family has agreed to accept a $3 million settlement to end their lawsuit against the City of New York. Full story

Street crime unit dismantled
Citing shortages in other areas of a shrinking police department, newly appointed NYPD Commissioner Raymond Kelly announced in May 2002 that the controversial street crime unit which gained national attention when four of its officers were charged in connection with Diallo's shooting would be disbanded.

Amadou Diallo was unarmed when he was killed by police in a fusillade of 41 bullets outside his Bronx apartment house on Feb. 4, 1999. The four officers were acquitted of all state criminal charges on Feb. 25, 2000.
