Diallo family agrees to $3 million settlement
Four years after four police officers responsible for the shooting of Amadou Diallo were cleared of criminal wrongdoing in the West African immigrant's death, the slain man's family has agreed to accept a $3 million settlement to end their lawsuit against the City of New York.

  • Street crime unit dismantled
    Citing shortages in other areas of a shrinking police department, newly appointed NYPD Commissioner Raymond Kelly announced in May 2002 that the controversial street crime unit — which gained national attention when four of its officers were charged in connection with Diallo's shooting — would be disbanded.
