William McTaggart

This is the west coast of Scotland, and the weather is evidently harsh and cold. McTaggart gives a vivid impression in this picture of a windswept day out at sea. The men struggle against the force of the wind, using their body weight to keep their boat from capsizing. Boats nearby, all blown over to one side, experience the same problem. The artist used strokes of thick white paint to show the unremitting spray of the waves.
