Dimitar Berbatov elected to play down his contribution to our UEFA Cup progress to the last eight after his two-goal show against Braga.

His first was a cool finish after his run into the area was picked out by Robbie Keane, while his second was a simply stunning strike, volleyed home after controlling Tom Huddlestone’s free-kick.

“I’m very pleased with the goals I scored, but it doesn’t matter who hits the net so long as the team wins,” he reasoned. “Tonight it was me, next time it might be someone else and I shall celebrate for them,” added Dimitar, who was irritated by reports suggesting he is in the process of seeking an improved contract at the Club.

"My contract is long enough! I was really surprised and disappointed to read it in the newspaper and I want to say that it is not true. I don't think about these things, I concentrate on my career, my football and my goals.

"I am very happy here and it is not correct to put things like that in the newspapers. My primary goal is to enjoy my football and entertain the fans who come to see us."

The Bulgarian international also wanted to express his gratitude to the fans for their response to the cause represented by his wearing of an armband in recent games.

The armband is from the ‘You Are Not Alone’ campaign, a project canvassing for the release of five Bulgarian nurses who are currently facing the death penalty in Libya, accused of deliberately infecting children with HIV through a lack of care.

Many supporters contacted the Club after spotting the 26-year-old sporting the armband for the first time against West Ham at Upton Park last weekend and were quick to lend their backing to the project - a Bulgarian flag was displayed by fans at the Paxton Road end during Wednesday night's game.

"It was really nice to see such a flag and the way they showed support for a Bulgarian cause was really touching. Some people might think the cause is already lost, but we will keep on campaigning.”
