IAPC requires individual purchase of the HANDBOOK which provides important policies and details that help candidates prepare portfolios. There is widespread marketplace confusion surrounding Certification in the protocol and etiquette community. The HANDBOOK is a resource to reliable and accurate information. STEP 3, Submit Certification Application:
The Service Mark International Association of Protocol Consultants® and CPC® are registered marks. The Certification Marks Certified Protocol Consultant, Certified Protocol Officer, and CPO® are trademarks that are filed in the United States Patent and Trademark Office, and therefore are proprietary intellectual property of IAPC. All IAPC marks are represented by Legal Counsel. The APPLICATION is based on a point system. Points are awarded for qualifying protocol and etiquette professional experience, professional and administrative development activities, responsibility, leadership and education. Specific information for determining and reporting earned points is included in the HANDBOOK and APPLICATION. Continuous Education: With appropriate documentation, any and all business protocol, government and military protocol, international protocol, and executive etiquette continuing education OR professional development program related to certification aspirations may earn points if the program adheres to the same internationally recognized standards as IAPC prerequisite, “Mastering Protocol, Etiquette & Civility” and is acquired through a nonprofit organization. Points will be calculated according to the formula provided in IAPC’s Candidate Handbook (HANDBOOK) and Official Application for Certification (APPLICATION). IAPC also accepts all worldwide university programs in International Affairs, as well as college/university-level studies in languages, culture, and diplomacy. Q. What is involved in recertification? If a certificant fails to recertify within the appropriate guidelines, permission to use the appellation will be rescinded. Unauthorized use of a registered trademark is a copyright infringement. The International Association of Protocol Consultants® (IAPC) will take all action necessary to prevent the improper use of the CPC® or CPO® designation by individuals who fail to recertify. How are the Certified Protocol Consultant (CPC®) and Certified Protocol Officer (CPO® ) programs governed? The Certification Council (designated by IAPC but separate from the IAPC Board of Directors) has developed, and oversees the CPC® and CPO® programs. The Certification Council is composed of five practicing Protocol Consultants and two Independent Certification Panel members. The Certification Council volunteers time to ensure the validity, credibility, and continuing prestige of the CPC® and CPO® programs. The Independent Certification Panel members provide review and direct counsel to benefit the advancement and success of IAPC programs. In addition to representing the diversity that exists within the profession, the Certification Council seeks to represent the diversity within the profession and serves as an important voice for stake holders dedicated to maintaining the highest industry standards. CERTIFICATE: Awarded to an individual who has completed a course or program of study and may also be awarded in recognition of program attendance. CERTIFIED PROTOCOL CONSULTANT CPC® or CERTIFIED PROTOCOL OFFICER CPC®: Candidates qualify based on background experience for one of two appellations. If a seasoned professional currently works with business protocol, international protocol, and executive etiquette, the CPC® would be the preferred choice. However, if the seasoned professional is currently specializing in government and/or military protocol, , the CPO® is the more appropriate designation. Teresa Babb is the Program Manager of the Defense Attaché Spouse Training Program at the Joint Military Attaché School (JMAS), Defense Intelligence Agency in Washington, DC. She helps train DOD and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officers, noncommissioned officers, civilian personnel, and their spouses selected for duty at United States embassies worldwide. Since 2000 her thrice yearly twelve-week program has incorporated protocol, etiquette, civility, and cross-cultural information for the express purpose of improving the lives of military diplomats. The public nature of embassy assignments requires extensive preparation for success. Anna Hart has been the Social Director and Protocol Adviser to the Brigade of Midshipmen and Protocol Adviser to the Commandant, at the United States Naval Academy (USNA) in Annapolis, Maryland since 2003. She is the first to develop and present a four-year officership training program in protocol, etiquette, and civility for a student population of 4,000 Midshipmen. Her programs prepare Midshipmen to represent the Academy today and to be respected as future officers, as well as “ladies and gentlemen.” Hart enjoys lecturing and interacting with civilian college-age people also. She designed a model formal dining practicum for The University of Maryland Alumni Association, Student Programs and Advocacy (professional development program for Juniors and Seniors) which she has been delivering as a guest lecturer for more than a decade. McLean, Virginia - October 26, 2005 – The Convention Industry Council (CIC) approved the International Association of Protocol Consultants (IAPC) as its newest member organization at its board of directors meeting on October 6, 2005. The Convention Industry Council's 32 member organizations represent more than 103,500 individuals, as well as, 17,300 firms and properties involved in the meetings, conventions and exhibitions industries.
