Kennedy Cup

REGATTA HIGHLIGHTS:

Friday on the Chesapeake Bay saw east winds 10-20 knots. 3 Races were held on four leg windward leeward courses.

Day 2 in Annapolis was good for sailing and ducks. Good breeze and a bit soggy.

Conditions appeared grim this morning as the 10 competing teams gathered on the Chesapeake Bay for the third and final day of the 2006 Kennedy Cup.

After a 45 minute postponement, the breeze finally appeared from the southwest at 6-8 kts and a race was quickly started. The direction and velocity shifted back and forth as competitors battled around the course. URI won the day's first race in a photo finish over Washington College while Saturday's leaders were mired back in the pack.

Going into the finale, Navy held their first lead of the regatta with a slim 2 point margin over King's Point while Cal Maritime had closed to within 3 of the lead.

The southwesterly shut down and was replaced by what appeared to be a solid northwesterly. The RC reset the course and the final race got underway in 10-12 kts.. 4 teams found themselves OCS while the wind soon veered 35 degrees right favoring the teams who started at the boat end. The RC moved the second windward mark but the wind veered another 40 degrees biasing the final two legs as well. URI continued the form that had cruelly eluded them Saturday and took another bullet while Navy finished second to secure the regatta.

Thanks to PRO Taran Teague and her help onboard the signal boat as well as Chief Judge Bob Conner and his team who adjudicated the disagreements of the event as well as the many volunteers who helped out as safety officers aboard the Navy 44s: Dick Morin, Henry Morgan, Mike Ramsden, Maureen Mills, Mike Brownlee, Rick Crow, Mike Henderson, Bob Holmes, Mike Reifer, Gary Shaw, Joan Wheeler, Harry Gamber, Gene Gibbons, Ernie Messer and Jan Jacobsen.
