The municipality is situated between a triad of north-east Moravian towns -Nový Jičín, Odry, Fulnek-on the left bank of the Oder. There is the ridge of the Moravian-Silesian Beskids towards south-east and that of the Oderské vrchy towards the west. The climate is somewhat colder than at comparable altitudes elsewhere because the place is not shielded from the cold northerly winds. The southeastern portion of the territory is part of the Poodří Nature Reserve, one of the world's protected wet grounds. The western sector is taken up by the recreational zone named Kletné. The former independent village was incorporated into Suchdol in order to be converted into a purely recreational area. The principal assets of Kletné are beautiful scenery, clean air, plus the conversion of heating to natural gas completed in 1997. Suchdol's history started back in the l4th century as a part of the Fulnek Domain. In the lóth century, Suchdol was taken over by the Kunín domain. One interesting thing about Suchdol was the religious composition. Beside the catholic majority there used to be a Lutheran minority which expatriated to Upper Lusatia in the l8th century to found Herrnhut and revive the Unitas Fratrum. Suchdol's history contains names like Comenius and D. Nitschmann. Galenite was exploited in the neighbourhood during the l4th century and there are still several quarries and a lake calling the activity back to the memory. Local architectural treasure is the baroque catholic parish while the skyline is dominated by a pair of church spires. Most local inhabitants have always made their living on agriculture. Alternatives appeared only in the late l9th century when Suchdol was chosen for the site of the new important railway junction between Bohumín and Přerov. Suchdol's population presently amounts to some 2,500. Housing flocks along two parallel roads and the old farms have been replaced with modern private houses. Agriculture, the railway, mechanical engineering and construction companies are the leading employers. Let us mention some of the important companies: Agrosumak, Pamet, PKD Stavba, Romotop, Stavo, Unistad. There is a network of cooperative and private shops a policlinic and a basic school. Cultural life bustles in and around the local Culture Club. There is a playground for various sports in the village. One traditional event is the start and end of the international Pony Express. |
