What is the difference between On-loan Octopus and Sold Octopus?

On-loan Octopus are encoded with a deposit amount of HK$50 and a remaining value for sale. Sold Octopus are encoded with no deposit and no remaining value. On-loan Octopus are refundable subject to a handling fee of HK$7 within three months of use. Sold Octopus with special graphics and in limited editions are non-refundable but exchangeable in a warranty period. The remaining value of both types of Octopus can be used to negative HK$35.

Which transport operators are offering concessionary fares to students?

At present, MTR offers concessionary fares and KCR (Light Rail) offers a bonus scheme to eligible students. To enjoy the concessionary fare or the bonus scheme, you must first apply for student status on your Octopus either through your school or college, or direct from the two companies.

What is the age limit for using a Child Octopus?

At present, children aged 3 and below 12 are eligible to use a Child Octopus for transport travel including MTR, KCR, KMB, Citybus, New World First Bus and New World First Ferry.

What is the age requirement for using an Elder Octopus?

At present, customers who reach the age of 65 or above are eligible to use Octopus for the Elderly for travelling on MTR, KCR, KMB, New World First Bus and New World First Ferry. The age limit is lowered to 60 or above for customers on Citybus and Kwoon Chung Bus.

How do I apply for an MTR Airport Staff Octopus?

If you are required to report for duty at Hong Kong International Airport, you can apply for an MTR Airport Staff Octopus via your company.

If you resign, or are no longer required to work in the Airport, you will not be eligible to use the Octopus, and must return it to the MTR through any MTR station. The MTR will then arrange a refund for you. Please contact the MTR for details.

What is an Airport Express Tourist Octopus? How do I use the 3-day Tourist Octopus?

The "Airport Express Tourist Octopus - 3-day Hong Kong Transport Pass" is issued by the MTR Corporation Limited. The features of the Octopus are as follows:

i. There are two types of Octopus: the first comprises ONE free Airport Express Single Journey and other benefits, and costs HK$220; and the second comprises TWO free Airport Express Single Journeys and other benefits, and costs HK$300. The free journey(s) is valid for 180 days from the date of purchase.
ii. Apart from free Airport Express Single Journeys, benefits offered by both types of Octopus are:
a. 3-day unlimited rides on the MTR;
b. HK$20 usable value, and
c. HK$50 refundable deposit.
iii. The free Airport Express journey(s) and the 3-day unlimited MTR rides are non-refundable.

Other than these features, the Octopus functions like a normal Octopus. The HK$20 usable value will be deducted when the Octopus is used on other forms of transport or in retail outlets, or on the MTR when the 3-day unlimited ride expires. After the usable value has been used up, customers can reload their Octopus at any MTR or KCR stations, New World First Ferry piers and at retail outlets such as 7-Eleven and Circle-K convenience stores.

Where can I buy the Airport Express Tourist Octopus?

You can buy the Octopus at any MTR station Customer Service Centre.
