COLUMBUS, Ga. -- Columbus State scored two runs in the third inning of the first game and Amber Browning made it hold up in a 2-1 victory to clinch the 2007 Peach Belt Conference championship. The Lady Cougars then overcame a 1-0 deficit by scoring a total of seven runs in the fifth and sixth innings to earn the sweep with a 7-2 win. The sweep extends the CSU winning streak to 29 games heading into next weekend's PBC Tournament. (More)

GREENSBORO, Ga. -- The Peach Belt Conference will tee up its 16th annual Golf Championships beginning on Monday at the Harbor Club in Greensboro, Ga. All nine PBC teams will compete in the three-round, two-day event which will culminate in the crowning of the 2007 Champion on Tuesday. AMERICUS, Ga. -- Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) Athletic Director Randolph Barksdale today announced two changes in the athletic department staff. Former assistant athletic director and athletic trainer, Jaclyn Kaylor, has been promoted to associate athletic director while women's basketball head coach Jennifer Rodkey has accepted a position as GSW’s National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) Compliance Coordinator. Rodkey will no longer coach the women's basketball team. (More)

 

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Augusta State’s Tyrekus “AJ” Bowman has been named an NABC All-American, according to a recent announcement from the National Association of Basketball Coaches.

The honor is the second major award for Bowman in the last two weeks. He was named the State of Georgia Men’s College Player Of The Year on March 27 and was honored during the annual Naismith Awards Banquet on April 5 at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta. (More)

Davor Zink, Armstrong Atlantic State Junior • Santiago, Chile - Zink led the No. 3-ranked Pirates to two wins on the week, including a 5-4 upset of top-ranked (NAIA) Auburn Montgomery on Saturday ... Zink, currently ranked No. 29 in DII in singles, defeated No. 6 (NAIA) Anton Brykalin, 6-0, 3-6, 6-0, at the top singles spot in the Pirates' win over the Senators ... Zink also defeated Barton's Robert Jenner, 6-2, 6-4, in Sunday's action ... Teamed with Taavo Roos to pick up two doubles wins, defeating AUM's Andjelic and Jenner, 8-4, and Barton's Papi and Miskovic, 8-4. (Full List)

Anna Novo, USC Upstate Sophomore • Caracas, Venezuela -- Novo went 4-0 last week in singles and doubles. In singles play, she began by claiming a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory over No. 24 Raluca Moldovan at the No. 1 as Upstate beat Columbus 5-4 on the road. On Sunday, she claimed another tough three-set victory, winning 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 against ninth-ranked Raphaelle Durante of fourth-ranked Valdosta State. In doubles play, she and Vivian Neuenschwander teamed to win 8-6 over Moldovan and Dondera at Columbus State and Rothlaender and Corten of Valdosta State (ranked third in the nation) at the No. 1 position. Amy Dumas, Augusta State 5-9 • Jr. • RHP • McDonough, Ga.-- Dumas gave up only one earned run in 22 innings pitched last week in four games as she went 3-0. Began with a five-hit shutout of Georgia Southwestern, then tossed a two-hit shutout against USC Aiken and gave up one run on three hits in a win over GCSU. The junior flamethrower struck out 30 of the 90 batters she faced, collecting double-digit K’s against GSW and GCSU. Also hit a home run at the plate. Continues to lead the PBC in strikeouts and is fifth in ERA and second in opponents batting average. (Full List)

Janine Allen, Francis Marion 5-9 • Sr. • 1b • Lilburn, Ga. -- Allen had a power-hitter’s dream week, going 6 for 11 at the plate in four games with three home runs, two doubles and nine RBIs, all against conference opponents. She hit .545 with an eye-popping 1.545 slugging percentage and .643 on-base percentage. She tied a conference-only single game record with two home runs in the opener against Lander, driving in six runs in that game. Also homered in a loss at UNC Pembroke. The week’s output moved her into 10th in the PBC in home runs and 12th in RBIs. (Full List)

Drew Candlin, Columbus State 6-3 • Sr. • LF • Newnan, Ga. -- Candlin hit .600 in four games last week with a .850 slugging percentage. In a three-game series at North Georgia, the senior hit .467, going 5-for-5 in the series finale with a three-run home run and five RBIs. He collected multiple hits in every game he played in and raised his season batting average more than 30 points. Scored five times and had two doubles with his home run. Currently ranked third in the PBC in hits and is sixth in runs scored and 10th in RBIs. (Full List)

Truman Marek, Armstrong Atlantic State 6-0 • Sr. • RHP • St. Joseph, Mo. -- Retired all eight batters he faced in picking up two saves for the Pirates in AASU’s three-game PBC sweep of UNC Pembroke. He came in to a 3-2 one-run game on Friday evening and hurled two shutout innings for his third save of the season, then pitched 2/3 of a scoreless ninth, preserving a 7-3 victory for the Pirates. He has yet to give up an earned run on the hill this season and now has four saves on the year, all in PBC play. Currently tied for fourth in the league in saves. (Full List)
