Canada's Michipicoten Island is a Lake Superior mystery. Remote and difficult to access and home to Woodland Caribou, wacky "sea" beavers, abandoned copper mines, agate beaches and shipwrecks. On this sea kayak adventure, we spend seven days circumnavigating this mysterious island. A fishing tug transports us there and back.
Your trip begins from our "Rock Island" lodge on Lake Superior near Wawa, Ontario with a group paddling session, trip orientation and delicious fresh fish BBQ. Early next morning we board the tug for a 3-hour tour along the Pukaskwa coast cross then about 18 km to Michipicoten Island.
In 1968, the Ontario government designated most of Michipicoten Island as a Provincial Park partly due to it's long history of failed copper mining (now overgrown), ship wrecks and light houses. At about the same time Woodland Caribou were reintroduced to the Island and their population has been growing since; so there is a good chance you will see one on this trip.
Although each group will travel according to its own pace, we tend to spend much of the day on the water leaving lots of time for "covering the distance" and exploring. Daily paddling distances range from 10 - 15 km and we build in a lot of time to enjoy Superior from shore if it gets too rough.
You guide(s) have advanced wilderness first aid, sea kayak paddling and sea kayak guide course certifications. Safety is their primary concern. They know and love Lake Superior and want to share their knowledge with you. They are wonderful wilderness chefs and "on trip" meals are healthy, fresh and delicious (no freeze dried stuff here!)
On this trip we provide, professional sea kayak instruction and guiding, all meals, group safety, sanitation, cooking and eating utensils. Because this is a more advanced trip guest often bring their own sea kayaks and tents, however expedition style sea kayaks, tents, dry bags, farmer john/Jane wetsuits and paddling jackets are available for an additional charge.
