Ozzie says software/services combo Microsoft’s future

Microsoft’s future is grounded in software and services integrated for use on the server, desktop or mobile devices, according to Ray Ozzie, the company’s chief software architect. Ozzie Monday opened the company’s annual Mix developers conference in Las Vegas with a keynote address during which he laid out Microsoft’s direction in a world where online services have taken hold. Services will not replace local client software, only offer a complement to code running on the desktop or vice versa, he said.

Microsoft to open source some of Silverlight IDG News Service, 04/27/07

Microsoft is expected to show a new friendliness to the open-source community by unveiling plans to release the source code to a part of its Silverlight technology at MIX 07 next week, according to sources familiar with the company's plans. Sources said Microsoft will also release a beta of Silverlight, a recently unveiled browser plug-in that allows Web content providers to offer a rich video and interactive media experience from directly within Web sites.

Microsoft SharePoint falls short in Web content management, analyst firm says Network World, 04/27/07

Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) 2007 does a poor job managing Web content, leading to extraneous JavaScript, difficulties implementing complex forms of navigation, and problems when companies use Web content that needs to be translated into multiple languages, an analyst firm called CMS Watch says in a new report that evaluates content management products.

Lucian Rusu writes: "I have on my university 3 workgroups. I want the the following: I don't want users from the workgourp 1 and 2 to see shared resources from the workgroup 3. I did this by changing the subnetmask, but I'm the administrator and I need to access all the network resources. There is any other way to do the same restriction and I can see all the network resources? The network is WinXP. I need a solution until I setup Active directory on Win 2003 server standard. I have some problems with configuring Active Directory and until I solve this I need a solution."

I tried adding the 2003 R2 as a Domain Controller and it says that the Active Directory Schema does not match the current DC Schema. I've run adprep/forestprep and /domainprep on the SBS."

Microsoft: DNS patch to come by May 8, maybe

Microsoft hopes to fix by May 8 a critical flaw in Windows Domain Name System (DNS) servers that is being exploited by online criminals, the company said. Microsoft has been under pressure to address the flaw, reported last week, since software that exploits it has now been widely disseminated, and criminals are beginning to use it in attacks.
