The crown, the sceptre, the orb and the key are the principal regal symbols for the country and the monarch as Head of State. The regalia, all with a symbolism of their own, are noted down from the coronation of Erik XIV´s coronation in 1561. Today the regalia are still important symbols of the monarchy and their traditions.
At coronations and religious ceremonies at the royal court, such as baptisms and funerals for example, the crown, sceptre, orb and key are placed on a special regalia table to highlight the importance of the event.
The regalia are state property and under the Instructions promulgated in 1594 are entrusted to the Chamber of Receipts, today called Kammarkollegium, the Legal, Financial and Administrative Services Agency.
From the beginning of the 1900s until 1970, the regalia were stored in the Riksbank (the Swedish Central Bank).
From 1970 the regalia have been on exhibition for the public in a special Treasure Chamber in the Royal Palace of Stockholm's southern vault.
