Machinist-Materials,
Plastics Comparison Table.

Stainless comparison Table:

Materials for sale listings:

A handy table so that you can compare some plastic materials. On of the main reasons
that we put this table on the website is to help with your understanding of some of these
less known materials.

Disclaimer: These values have been gleaned from dozens of sources including manufacturer
literature, websites, Machinery Handbook, and others.  They are believe to be correct, we would
not suggest using this information as a sole source for engineering decisions.  Users should
contact specific manufacturers for detailed and specific information for specific materials.

Many manufacturers have substituted other materials for projects that used to call for
Delrin® , they do this because some of these materials are actually better in some
specification for a job and also many of these materials can offer a more cost effective
solution.
For us Delrin® moves very quickly therefore the price is substantially higher. While
many of the Nylons' are just as suitable a material for many projects and the cost is
less.

For outside applications UV stable HDPE products like King Starboard® ,
Seaboard and others are attracting a lot of attention for its durability and
ease of fabrication.

Delrin® is a registered trademark of DuPont.

Starboard® is a registered trademark of King Plastics
Many have asked about gluing Starboard or other marine HDPE materials.
Here is a link to some information from King Plastics: http://www.kingstarboard.com/main.php?link=glue.htm

Hydex® is a registered trademark of A. L. Hyde Company

We thank InterState Plastics for much of this information.

Properties for clear materials >>>>> go to the far right of the table.  Lexan and Hyzod are polycarbonates.  Perspex, Acrylite, Plexiglas, Polycast and Cyrolite are basically Acrylics.

Thermal Forming: here is a basic primer on thermal forming: It is for acrylic but the information is still useful and
informative for ABS, Styrene, polycarbonate and others.
They seem to move their pages around and break this link.
You can go directly to the Bay Plastics Site and hunt if the link does not work.

We have found another fabrication guide that might be of interest, this one is in PDF format.
This one is produced and published by 3formtm   http://3-form.com/fabrication_techniques.pdf
3formtm is a company that specializes in textured clear/translucent panels of PETG.
Their fabrication information is still applicable to other polymer materials.

Specific gravity or whether not something floats in water: water has a specific gravity of 1.0 by definition.
This is pure H2O at 62 degrees F.  Our density field for the table is in pounds/cubic inch. The density of
water is 0.036085 pounds per cubic inch.  The estimated density of salt water is 0.0371676 pounds per cubic
inch at 62 degrees F.  If the material in the table is heavier per cubic inch it sinks, and lighter per cubic, inch it floats.

    HARDNESS SCALE:

Adhesives:   We no longer sell any adhesives and have limited personal experience
using any adhesive, but the link will provide some useful information.
