THIS SUBJECT GUIDE unlocks the door to the Radical Papers of the U.P Diliman Main Library.
The Radical Papers is a collection of documents of student, political, and religious organizations advocating political, economic, and social changes during the Marcos administration.
Among the items in the collection are the speeches and letters of Sen. Benigno Aquino, Jr.; the documents of the Communist Party of the Philippines, New People's Army, and National Democratic Front; and the periodicals of the underground movements.
The U.P. Main Library acquired the Radical Papers in an extremely guarded manner during the martial law period. Most of the materials were sent to the library unsolicited. For fear of being caught in possession of sensitive materials, some people purposely left them on top of the reading tables in the library. Some faculty members and students donated the manifestos and brochures they gathered from the rallies and symposia they had attended.
Hidden from the public for almost thirty years, the collection was kept in two steel cabinets in the library, without any formally organized guide to its use.
In 1996 -- recognizing the importance of the collection to scholars studying the Marcos era - the U.P. Main Library, in collaboration with Cornell University, and later with the University of Wisconsin, ventured to organize, index, and preserve the documents through microfilming.
