Arriving at the Children's Home

When visiting your new child at the orphanage it is a good idea to ask the home doctor and caregivers some questions. By having the list of questions also translated in Russian before them- this makes the process easier for everyone. Below I have written a list of questions in English and then the translation in Russian. You can copy and paste this if you would like to use it.

Before you arrive at the orphanage make sure that you tell your facilitators/translators that you want complete translations of your questions.

57. What state of health was the child in when brought to the orphanage?

58. Is there any history of prenatal alcohol or      exposure or abuse?

59. Do you know why has the child not been adopted before now?

59. Вы(не)  знаете,  почему ребёнка не усыновили/удочерили до сих пор?

60. Will you write your name and a small greeting to the child to be remembered by?

60. Пожалуйста, напишите своё имя и небольшое приветствие ребёнку, на память.

I took that same list with me plus a few other questions I came up with. Most of it isn't realavent on your first trip. They will give you the schedule and such when you take your child from the BH. The doc has done this so many times they automatically answer your questions for you. I didn't have to ask many.Also, you can ask for a copy of the medical records, but they likely won't give them to you and they definately won't translate them. Your agency will have to translate them or you will have to find someone to do it for you.Be prepared to take notes like you have never taken in your life or take a small tape recorder and tape the conversation (with permission of course).These are my little bits of assvice from our experience on the first trip goes. Of course every first trip is different.

Thanks for the advice. I have heard some people were able to ask a lot of questions and others none - but it is a good idea to be prepared because you never know. The tape recorder is a good idea.
