BOCA RATON, FL (February 26, 2007) – “Let’s Fall in Love Again,” a song produced and arranged by Florida Atlantic University commercial music graduate Israel Charles as his FAU master’s thesis, entered the “Billboard” Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles Sales Chart at No. 7 in just its first week out. In addition, the recording moved from No. 15 to No. 9 on the Hot Singles Sales Chart. The mid-tempo urban hit is the first single from new R&B/Soul recording artist Rachel Brown and is unchanged from the recording that Charles produced when he was in FAU’s commercial music program.
“A project produced as a master’s thesis that goes to the top 10 in sales in the Billboard listing is unheard of,” said Michael Zager, Dorothy F. Schmidt Eminent Scholar in the Performing Arts, professor of music, and founder and director of FAU’s commercial music program and Hoot/Wisdom Recordings, which is located in the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters. “This success is a reflection of the caliber of our students in FAU’s commercial music program.”
Charles graduated from the program with a MA in music, with a concentration in commercial music in the fall of 2006 and is currently the commercial music production instructor at Dillard High School in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.
“FAU’s commercial music program allowed me to gain a more comprehensive understanding of music production and the music industry,” said Charles. “Being able to create a high quality production is a great accomplishment in itself, but the program also teaches you the business of music so that you are equipped with the skills necessary to maximize your talent. It’s one of very few programs of its kind in the country that offers hands-on expert instruction by such a highly regarded industry heavyweight like Professor Zager.”
FAU’s commercial music program was founded in 2002 with the introduction of the Bachelor of Arts in music with a major in commercial music. Since then, the Master of Arts with a concentration in commercial music and an undergraduate minor in commercial music have been added. In addition, a Master of Science in music business administration was introduced in the Fall of 2006.
“Let’s Fall in Love Again,” performed by Rachel Brown, who is also based in South Florida, was recorded with the Urban Music Group, an independent record label.
