All Good Things...

It's official. The fourth season of Battlestar Galactica will be its last.

Also, the Sci Fi Channel has lifted its demand for stand alone episodes and is allowing the show writers to devote the entire season to ending the epic the right way.

For the fans.

Galactica season 5?

The producer, David Eick, tries to FUD away Olmos' comment about season 4 being the last for Galactica. However, I think the writing is on the wall.

Let us not talk falsely now, the hour's getting late...

If you caught BSG last night, you get it. If you didn't catch it, well...

For _years_ I have been noodling with ways of making that song a background to a post-apocalyptic fantasy story. I'm not a good enough storyteller to pull it off. Ron Moore, it would seem, is...

Galactica News

The SciFi Channel has expanded its order of episodes from 13 to 22 for the fourth season of Battlestar Galactica. An official announcement is expected today.

This order also includes a two-hour special detailing the events that transpired on the Battlestar Pegasus shortly after the second Cylon War began and will air fourth quarter 2007. It will also be released on DVD.

The straight-to-DVD movie is still set to be released this fall. It will take place between seasons three and four but will not resolve season three’s cliffhanger.

I don’t know how I feel about this. I don’t mind filler episodes but this season’s filler episodes have been pretty bad outside of only one I can think of (that union episode). Still, Ron Moore and crew can get their act together. The episodes that advanced the core plot have all been very good in my opinion. They just need to strengthen their “B” game.

I am excited to see a two-hour special about the Pegasus. There’s quite a tale to tell there and I expect we’ll see that the events we were led to believe transpired on her didn’t happen quite like we thought.

Battlestar Galactica is still SciFi’s most popular show. I’m glad to see them giving her the star treatment. They obviously have faith in her yet. So do I.

Galactica Sunday (On Monday)

And Saint Attila raised the hand grenade up on high, saying,’O Lord, bless this thy hand grenade that with it thou mayest blow thine enemies to tiny bits, in thy mercy.’ And the Lord did grin, and the people did feast upon the lambs and sloths and carp and anchovies and orangutans and breakfast cereals and fruit bats and large chu—

The awesomeness that is Battlestar Galactica transcends ideological differences! It may be delayed but never will it be defeated. My thoughts, as always, hidden below.

BSG Picked Up For The 4th

TV Guide is reporting that they're expecting an announcement today that will make it official - SciFi's Battlestar Galactica will be picked up for a 4th season with an order of 13 episodes.

I agree with Dean that the show has been slipping. Just not to the degree that he thinks it is. However, Ron Moore complained during season 2 about the additional episodes and that it led to what many feel was the weakest episode of that season, "Black Market." Hopefully, back to season 1 numbers, Moore and crew can tell a tighter, more compelling drama. And it would also seem that SciFi learned from the errors of it ways by expecting too much (unrealistically so) from their highest rated show. They got a bit greedy and the show suffered because of it.

But, now that we're getting a 4th season that means we're also getting a direct-to-DVD movie this summer!

Odds are the SciFi will air this film. As Moore has already stated, it will not continue from the cliffhanger ending but will take place between this season and the next.

Oh, and we find out by the end of the season that a major character is a Cylon. And it's not supposed to be Starbuck.

Dean, I still think you owe me a steak dinner. Just on principle. Don't fight it. You know I'm right.

Galactica Sunday

Hmmmm. Guess I'm doing the Battlestar Galactica posts now. Well, I know that Dean's enthusiasm for the show has waned of late so I guess it's up to the next generation.

With the show on at 10 PM on Sunday's that means I don't often watch it until the following Monday. To be honest the new day doesn't work for me at all. For example, I have a bi-weekly game I attend. It typically gets done at 11 PM. I need to get to bed afterwards for work the next day. It's a bloody pain in my posterior.

However, as these posts are coming up after the episode airs it allows me to give my thoughts (albeit via hidden text) on the post on the front page! Go me.

Sunday's Galactica

Well, it appears our gracious host has forgotten about this week's Battlestar Galactica.

I'd say no spoilers but since it aired two days ago I'll put my thoughts on the front page but keep the text hidden just in case.

BSG News

Who wants some Battlestar Galactica news? You, sir, would you like some? You, over there, with the yellow shirt, I know you do! You, guy, up in the front, would you like to hear some news about the second half of the third season? You do? Well, come right up!

FYI: The article is full of spoilers - to a degree. If you want to remain completely in the dark about upcoming episodes then don't read it. Otherwise, I think it bodes well for the future. I know I'm quite excited.

What Would Baltar Do?

I like Battlestar Galactica too so Dean doesn’t get to bogart all the BSG posts.

After thinking on the awesomeness that was the last episode a question came to me: What would Baltar do? Or, perhaps, what should he have done?

Then it came to me: Would I have done any differently?

I think we can all agree Baltar was well on his way to becoming Caligula and probably would have been voted out of office when his term ended. But then the Cylons arrived and occupied New Caprica. First thing first – The Cylon occupation of New Caprica was not a metaphor of the U.S. in Iraq. Ron Moore said so himself. It’s an allegory of the Nazi occupation of France. We need to get the context straight before we continue.

Baltar obviously had no choice but to surrender to Cylon forces. The Galactica and Pegasus jumped away and no standing military was on the ground to repel an invasion. From the webisodes we learned it took a couple of months for the resistance to organize and by that time the Cylons had already cemented their power base.

Right now Baltar is seen as a villain by the Colonists. And maybe that isn’t a strong enough word – collaborator. He’s seen as someone actively working with the Cylons to aid their cause. Well, we know differently. But, now I wonder, would I have done any differently? The Cylons didn’t need Baltar’s assistance to do anything and he lived simply to rubber stamp their orders to his people. As we saw, they were more than willing to put a bullet in him if he didn't do what they wanted. At that point they would have simply installed a shill as President to do what Baltar didn’t.

Perhaps that is where Baltar failed. Had he stood on principle, and been killed, he probably would have been largely remembered as a martyr in the fight against the Cylons. That his death wouldn’t have done a thing to stop, or even slow, the Cylons' plan is irrelevant. He would have died for his principles.

Instead he chose to sign a piece of paper that someone else would have signed anyway and now he's a villain. A collaborator.

In war people do what they must to survive. Is it fair to judge them under these circumstances as we judge those who never experience such horror in all their lives? Should the same standard of justice be applied to people who would do terrible things during terrible times that they would not have otherwise? Is Baltar so much worse for simply wanting to live than someone who'd take a bullet rather than go through the charade of applying a rubber stamp?

I’m not trying to make Baltar look like a hero or anything. He’s no Tigh, Anders, Roslin or anyone else. But does being a person with no moral spine make one a villain? Or, just someone to pity and avoid?

I’m sure a gun in most people's face would make them do things they never thought they'd do before. I’m sure a gun to a loved one would make them do even more horrible things. Did Baltar love the people who elected him? I doubt it. However, when push came to shove he did what he could to save lives. Too bad none of the Colonials saw it.

Galactica Tonight

Before tonight's episode, here are my comments. After the episode I may have more.

I still love the show but I begin to sense the creators getting a little lax. This may be inevitable, and no show is perfect of course. One thing I noticed was that in the season opener they had the humans attacking the firing squad, and we heard gunshots fired as Cally ran. Then in the next episode (last week) the Colonials do not fire until the Chief knocks her to the ground.

Cheap guys. Cheap. I understand that all shows are imperfect and that suspension of disbelief is a contract the audience implicitely has with the producers. But that was a little much to me. Not quite as bad as the "Cylon baby blood" sin (still unforgiven on this blog) but come on. You guys weren't even trying on that one.

Also: I notice that the interesting plot thread last season of the pacifists/anti-war protestors who sympathized with the Cylons seems to have been utterly dropped. Bad move in my view. That thread should be tied up somewhere. It could be wrapped up pretty easily but just leaving it dangling would be a mistake in my view. (Of course they may tie up that loose thread at some point. It just seems odd to me that it's still dangling there.)

I'll also say in advance: the idea that they're going to evacuate tens of thousands of people in a rush job off New Caprica? Seems like a stretch to me. I haven't seen how they've done it in this episode (it hasn't aired yet as I write this) but I'm wondering if they're going to make it all a little too convenient.

Well we'll see. Those are my thoughts so far.

---

By the way, if you're thinking about starting to watch the show, you can go right here for a quick primer. It may seem a complex show at first--and it is in a lot of ways--but it's really not that hard to figure out.

Note: As always, spoilers are welcome in the comments once the episode has aired. Which means, after 10pm Eastern. No whining if you spot a spoiler after that time.

Update: Wow, what an episode eh?

"Obsession"

One thing that annoys me as a blogger is that I am occasionally informed that I or my co-bloggers have an "obsession" with a certain subject. Whenever I read that it grates upon me.

On a very slow day on Dean's World, at least a half-dozen new postings appear. On a busy day, 20 new postings would not be odd.

When American Idol was on, I was a few times accused of being "obsessed" with the show. Why? Because I enjoyed it and posted an average of 2-3 short articles a week about it: usually one on the night of the competition, and one on the night of the results show, and maybe an oddball extra now and then during the week.

Currently, my favorite TV show is Battlestar Galactica. As it happens, at the moment, there are exactly four TV shows I watch regularly, plus the news channels occasionally. That's it. And 2-3 days a week I post a thread about my favorite TV series. I actually don't watch much TV but I really love this show. I think it's genuinely great television: death, sex, war, love, terrorism, lust, faith and religion, politics, the military, and pathos on the order of the great Greek Tragedies. To me this show has it all.

I think it's great television, one of the best shows ever to have appeared on television. It's not without its flaws but I do love it.

So I just want to go on record as saying that I resent being told I'm "obsessed" with a TV show that I post 2-3 short articles about every week, usually during slow times like Friday or Saturday night. This out of the average of maybe a dozen articles a day that appear on Dean's World on a very broad range of topics and viewpoints.

If you don't like the show, cool. Although I will say that if you haven't even tried to watch it then you're just annoying. If you have watched it and decided you don't like it (hi Martin!) that's fine. You don't have to be in my "BSG club" if you don't want to be. But if you haven't even watched it, then really, who the Hell do you think you are?

Either way, let me and the others who like it have our fun, okay? We don't deserve your contempt or your condescension. In your busy life you can probably find some way to live with the fact that 2-3 short Dean's World articles a week appear about Battlestar Galactica.

Here's my proposed deal: I won't treat you like an idiot if you don't watch the show, if you don't treat me and my friends like idiots for liking the show and wanting to talk about it. Fair enough?

By the way, this is frakking hilarious. Thanks Jerry.

Update: Best comment of the week goes to Hokie Pundit, who said:

ANY OF YOU FRACKING PIGS MOVE AND I'LL EXECUTE EVERY LAST MOTHERFRACKING ONE OF YOU!!!
Dude, I'm still laughing.
