In 1986, the Czech engineer Pavel Pavel came up with a theory on how the inhabitants of Easter Island were able to transport the monolithic Moai statues. Pavel participated in an expedition to the island with Norwegian Thor Heyerdahl to put his theory into practice. In accordance with old legends, Pavel was able to move the monoliths in an upright position with the help of 16 people.
