"Cool"

December 9, 2007 -

This weekend at the New York Anime Fest, ADV Films and Capcom celebrated the upcoming release of the Devil May Cry anime as well as the debut of the new videogame Devil May Cry 4 with a special screening and Q&A for fans.

IGN's own Chris Carle moderated the Q&A panel, which featured ADV's Chris Oarr -- a.k.a. "Super King Awesome" -- and Capcom's Lindsay Young. Super Awesome himself, the boss-man known around the IGN offices simply as "the Carle" began by giving props to Devil May Cry 4, which he'd sampled at the ADV booth earlier in the day. You too can be among the first people in North American to get a taste of the game this weekend -- as long as you're at the con (and you're 17 or older).

An exclusive IGN video featuring game producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi discussing the title was next unveiled for the Devil May Cry fans at the panel, but fortunately you don't have to be in New York to check that out. Just see the clip below:

Next up was another video about the title from the Tokyo Game Show, and then it was on to the anime, which is coming on February 5th, the same day the game will be released.

Carle succinctly if snarkily summed up the videos just screened, which spent an awful lot of time talking about how "cool" Devil May Cry's main character Dante is, with the following: "To recap, in order to be powerful you need to look cool and do cool things."

Cool.

It was then on to the North American premiere of the anime, where we got to check out an entire episode of the series.

It's got an adult edge of course, with plenty of blood and some strong language (the New York con audience seemed to love hearing Dante call someone a douche bag). The plot involves our cool hero fighting and slaughtering various demons as he takes a young girl under his protection. The girl, an orphan who turns out to be the heir to a great fortune, is being hunted by her relatives who want that money for themselves. Along the way, we get to see Dante cruising in a sleek convertible, taking a creepy train ride, and checking into a seedy hotel, all in an attempt to keep the girl hidden. Phantasmagoric imagery punctuates the episode, as when a poster morphs into a giant butterfly or an opera singer in the spotlight on stage suddenly changes into… well, you'll need to check out the episode to find out.

During the Q&A that followed, it was revealed that the same voice actor in the new game is also playing Dante in the anime. In the game, you start off as a new character called Nero, who takes up about 60% of the game time, and then Dante fills the rest.

A special collector's edition is also being released in February which includes the game, the first volume of the anime, and a making-of bonus DVD, all housed in a Steelbook case. Completists looking for the volume one DVD case can enter their address at the ADV website in order receive it.

A fan also asked if any toys were in the works based on the series, and while there is no official word on that yet, it was hinted that there are some early talks pointing in that direction.

Stay tuned to IGN Anime for the latest on the New York Anime Fest! Cool!
