Phoenix FC 0 St Patrick's Athletic 4

Goals from Mark Quigley, Darragh Maguire, Alan Kirby and Kevin Cornwall saw St Pat's overcome non-league Phoenix in the FAI Ford Cup 2nd round at Richmond Park.

The afternoon downpour that hit Dublin 8 did nothing to deteriorate the immaculate Richmond Park pitch that had enjoyed two weeks rest though it did lend itself to a slightly faster surface.

St Pat's had the slightly better start and would have been two to the good only for Phoenix goalkeeper Vladimir Munteanu.

The former Monaghan United and Mount Merrion net minder blocked a Gary O'Neill ball on five minutes and then came out of his area to deny Dave Mulcahy on nine minutes.

Pat's started to dominate and soon took the lead. A super one-two between Michael Foley and Quigley on 15 minutes saw Quigley slot past Munteanu from left of the box.

Anto Murphy should have made it two on 20 minutes but fired across goal and into touch when scoring looked easier.

Munteanu then superbly blocked a rocket from Murphy on 33 minutes as Pat's bombarded the Phoenix goalmouth.

Darren Hennessy finally got Phoenix's first shot on goal seconds into time added on at the end of the first half but Barry Ryan was not troubled.

Phoenix boss, Harry Kenny, an FAI Cup winner with Shamrock Rovers in the 1980s, must have had words with his side at the break as they came out fighting for the second half.

The Leinster Senior League side put together good passages of play together but were let down by their finishing touch.

A lot of their work centred around Kenny's brother, Marc, the seasoned League of Ireland campaigner, who worked doggedly around centre midfield.

Maguire netted number two for Pat's from close range on 71 before Kirby made it three on 85. Cornwall rounded off the scoring on 89 with a neat shot through the packed Phoenix goalmouth.
