Tree boxes are located all over the District. They are the plots of grass and dirt between the street and sidewalk. Usually they have shrubs, trees, and metal or brick fences. Unfortunately, they are the most common littering victim in the city especially with bottles of liquor, beer, and empty cigarette packs.

Hence, Treebox Vodka* was born. I live in the Shaw/Logan area of D.C. I am disappointed with the amount of trash that litters the streets, sidewalks, alley-ways, and in the tree boxes. I plan on using this space to document my effort in cleaning up the streets in my neighborhood.

Check out my progress as I go along. Now that the weather is getting nice I hope to work with my neighbors to clean up the tree boxes and streets. Here’s to living in a cleaner community one tree box at a time.

*The title Treebox Vodka was inspired by the wonderful bottles of Vodka I pick up on my way to work in the mornings out of tree boxes.

Pile of trash in the alley off of 9th Street. Between N & O streets. This has been around for a week or so and nobody has cleaned it up.

I placed a D.C. service request for yesterday's post about the trash in the alley along 9th street. You can go here online > src.dc.gov and request sanitation enforcement and other city services. Here's the confirmation I received back:

Let's see if they clean it up by Friday.

Here's a pile of trash that has been on 11th street for at least a week or so. Pots, pans, clothes, and liquor bottles. I posted a DC service request for this one too, I believe that's due tomorrow. If it's still around this weekend, I'll get out the utility gloves and clean it myself.

Cheers to Remaking Le Slum Historique for the cool reference to my new blog and for the others who sent emails with the positive comments. All much more attention then I imagined when starting this. I just wanted to get something up and running and that's why I choose to use the free blog service, tumblr. But now that people are responding and interested, I think I should move over to a more traditional blog where people can comment on the posts.
