WANTED: LYLE MOODY

SYNOPSIS: At 10:25 p.m. on August 18, 1984, Albuquerque, New Mexico police officers Vic Webb and Rick Foley entered a pool hall called Gary's Game Room to arrest a woman wanted on fraud charges. As the policemen searched the bar, a black male burst from the back room, ordered them to drop their weapons, then opened fire. Both officers drew their weapons and a gunfight ensued as the two policemen attempted to flee out the front door. Although he was wearing a flak jacket, Officer Webb was hit twice. The second bullet ripped his right arm, severing an artery, and destroying nerves, rendering his shooting hand useless.

The injured officer managed to make his way out of the bar, where his partner, Officer Foley was already radioing for assistance. Only later did authorities realize that the suspect picked up Webb's gun and used it to make his escape on foot, apparently unharmed. The alleged assailant was subsequently identified as Lyle Moody, a paroled armed robber with a criminal record stretching back 17 years.

UPDATE: Lyle Moody was arrested on a criminal trespassing charge in New York City on the night of February 22, 2002. Moody gave police false identification, but the match on his fingerprints told them they had a wanted fugitive on their hands. Lyle Moody pled guilty to two counts of assault and one count of aggravated battery.  He was sentenced to 12 years in prison .
