Yaacov Agam (Yaakov Agam) is the son of Rabbi Yehoshua Gipstein. 1946 studies under Mordecai Ardon at Bezalel School of Arts and Crafts. 1949 studies under Johannes Itten at Kunstgewerbeschule and Siegfried Gideon at the Eidgenossische Technische Hothsrhule in Zurich. 1951 settles in Paris. 1953 first "polyphonic" paintings. 1959-61 initial experience with multiple-stage theater and sound sculpture. 1967 Agam begins to sculpt. 1968 lectures at Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts, Harvard University. 1970 Sandberg Prize.1971 first "Agamographs"; monumental sculpture for Parc Floral, Bois de Vincennes, Paris. 1972 monumental sculpture for presidential mansion, Jerusalem; "environment" for antechamber of Elys'e Palace, Paris. 1974 murals for American Telephone and Telegraph Company building. New York. 1975 honorary doctorate of philosophy from Tel Aviv University; monumental water sculpture for the Quartier de la Defense Paris; innovator and pioneer in kinetic art; the structure of his complex works, using intricate computer technologies and acoustic and lighting effects, changes as the spectator moves.
